Position Overview
Bowen Electric is seeking a highly experienced, strategic, and hands-on Director of Safety to lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of our company-wide safety program.
Bowen Electric is an established electrical contractor with a long operating history and a growing presence across Texas. We are looking for a safety leader who can take our existing safety practices and build them into a comprehensive, scalable, best-in-class safety program capable of supporting a growing organization, multiple locations, field operations, service work, large commercial projects, and future expansion.
This is a high-level leadership position. The ideal candidate will not simply administer existing safety policies. They will have the experience, credibility, and leadership ability to evaluate our current operation, identify gaps, establish standards, implement systems, train our workforce, and create a culture where safety is embedded into how we operate.
The Director of Safety will work closely with executive leadership, operations, project management, field leadership, HR, and employees at every level of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Development & Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive company-wide safety program from the ground up.
- Evaluate existing policies, procedures, practices, and field operations and establish a clear roadmap for improvement.
- Develop standardized safety policies, procedures, programs, and operating standards across all locations.
- Establish measurable safety objectives, KPIs, and accountability systems.
- Develop a scalable safety program capable of supporting significant company growth.
- Establish safety as a core component of operational planning and decision-making.
- Continuously evaluate industry best practices and implement improvements where appropriate.
Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain company compliance with applicable OSHA regulations and other federal, state, and local safety requirements.
- Maintain and manage required safety documentation, records, inspections, training, and reporting.
- Stay current on regulatory changes and communicate relevant requirements to leadership and field personnel.
- Lead preparation for OSHA inspections, audits, client audits, and other regulatory reviews.
- Develop systems to proactively identify and correct compliance deficiencies.
Field Safety & Risk Management
- Conduct regular field visits, jobsite inspections, and safety audits.
- Identify hazards and develop corrective and preventive actions.
- Establish consistent jobsite safety expectations across all projects.
- Partner with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and field employees to improve safety performance.
- Develop processes for Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), pre-task planning, toolbox talks, and other field safety initiatives.
- Establish procedures for high-risk electrical activities, including electrical safety, energized work, lockout/tagout, fall protection, confined spaces, excavation, lifting, fleet safety, and other applicable hazards.
- Ensure safety considerations are incorporated into project planning before work begins.
Training & Employee Development
- Develop and oversee a comprehensive safety training program for employees at every level.
- Establish onboarding and orientation requirements for new employees.
- Develop ongoing training programs for field personnel, foremen, project managers, and leadership.
- Establish training requirements based on job role and risk exposure.
- Develop leadership training that teaches supervisors and foremen how to actively manage safety in the field.
- Create a culture where employees are comfortable identifying and reporting hazards and near misses.
Incident Management
- Establish and manage the company’s incident and near-miss reporting process.
- Lead investigations of significant incidents, injuries, property damage, and near misses.
- Identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Track trends and use incident data to prevent recurring events.
- Work with HR, insurance carriers, and leadership as appropriate following incidents.
- Develop emergency response and crisis management procedures.
Safety Culture & Accountability
- Build a safety culture based on accountability, ownership, communication, and continuous improvement.
- Establish clear safety expectations for every level of the organization.
- Develop accountability systems for both employees and management.
- Ensure safety is not treated as solely the responsibility of the Safety Department.
- Partner with operations to make safety part of the daily operating process.
- Recognize and reinforce positive safety performance.
- Address unsafe behaviors and conditions promptly and consistently.
Leadership & Organizational Development
- Serve as the company’s senior safety subject-matter expert.
- Advise executive leadership on safety, risk, compliance, and operational exposure.
- Develop and lead the Safety Department as the company grows.
- Establish appropriate staffing, technology, systems, and resources for the safety function.
- Participate in major project pursuits and customer meetings when safety qualifications are a significant component of the opportunity.
- Help establish safety standards that position Bowen Electric as a preferred contractor for customers.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive safety experience, preferably within electrical contracting, commercial construction, industrial construction, or a similarly high-risk environment.
- Demonstrated experience building, implementing, and managing a comprehensive safety program.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety requirements.
- Significant field experience working directly with construction and operations teams.
- Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Experience developing and delivering safety training programs.
- Strong understanding of electrical safety and construction related hazards.
- Proven ability to influence operations and field leadership without relying solely on authority.
- Strong written, verbal, organizational, and presentation skills.
- Ability to travel to jobsites and company locations throughout Texas and as needed for future expansion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Construction Management, or related field.
- CSP, ASP, CHST, or other recognized safety certification.
- Electrical construction safety experience.
- Experience with multi-location organizations.
- Experience developing safety programs for rapidly growing companies.
- Experience working with major commercial, industrial, data center, manufacturing, or institutional customers.
- Experience with safety management software and reporting platforms.
- Experience managing safety personnel or building a safety department.
This individual will be responsible for helping Bowen Electric move from having safety practices to having a true safety management system and culture.
Pay: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
