This internship is designed for currently enrolled and/or recently graduated (within 6 months) college students. A copy of your current college transcripts (official or unofficial) must be submitted to verify eligibility. The ABC Commission is seeking a legal intern for the Fall of 2026. Specific responsibilities include legal office support work including agenda meeting preparation, legal research, possible public interaction, drafting legal documents under supervision, assisting with case preparation, reviewing files, attending court proceedings, and organizing evidence.
As an intern, you will be exposed to various aspects of administrative law environment from working with law enforcement, office duties and courtroom procedures. Most of the work is confidential.
This internship is expected to start on August 24, 2026, and continue through October 23, 2026. The work schedule is part-time (up to 30 hours per week) Monday-Thursday. The rate of pay is $15.00 per hour. We value our employees and are committed to providing flexibility in work schedules. This position qualifies for teleworking on a part-time basis as part of the State Telework Program.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
· DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.
The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences, including Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Managers may also choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
All work history and education (including accurate dates of employment/attendance) must be documented on the application. Work experience may include internships, volunteerism, and full and part-time work. A complete, all-inclusive application maximizes an applicant’s potential to qualify for the position, as well as receive the highest possible salary if selected for the position. Salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations for the advertised position.

Management Preferences
o Must be currently enrolled in college or a recent college graduate. NOTE: "Recent" graduates are those who have graduated within the last 6 months.
o Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Criminal Justice or other legal fields preferred, but any major will be considered. Recent graduates (with the last 6 months) will also be considered.

Transcripts

Degrees and transcripts must be achieved from an appropriately accredited college or university.
o Applicants who earned college credit hours but did not complete a degree program must attach an unofficial transcript to receive credit for education.
o International degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility. Military Experience
o Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that includes Character of Discharge - Member 4 or Service 2 form) to the application.
o Applicants seeking National Guard Preference: A current member of the North Carolina National Guard in good standing must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS). A former member of the North Carolina National Guard who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
