Job Overview

The Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and processing consumer loan applications while delivering a smooth and efficient lending experience for members. This role applies sound credit judgment, analyzes financial information, ensures compliance with lending standards, and supports accurate loan decisions from application review through closing and funding.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and member-focused, with experience in consumer lending, credit analysis, and loan documentation. This position plays an important role in supporting lending goals by maintaining strong credit quality, providing exceptional service, and contributing to continuous improvements within the lending process.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

· Review consumer loan applications for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with credit union policies and lending guidelines.

· Collect, review, and verify required documentation including income verification, employment information, credit reports, identification, collateral documentation, and other supporting records.

· Analyze member financial information, debt-to-income ratios, credit history, repayment capacity, and overall creditworthiness to make sound lending decisions.

· Approve, deny, counteroffer, or recommend loan requests within delegated lending authority and established underwriting guidelines.

· Communicate directly with members to obtain additional documentation, explain loan requirements, discuss underwriting conditions, and provide timely updates throughout the lending process.

· Serve as the primary owner of the loan process from application through funding to ensure an efficient and positive member experience.

· Prepare and maintain complete loan files that meet internal requirements, audit standards, and regulatory compliance expectations.

· Coordinate loan closings and funding activities, ensuring all required documentation and approval conditions are satisfied.

· Process loan payoffs, title releases, lien recordings, lien releases, and other servicing-related activities as required.

· Maintain accurate loan records and documentation within all applicable lending and core processing systems. Ensure titles for all applicable applications are processed appropriately on behalf of TDFCU.

· Utilize Portico, Loancierge, Client Central, Originate, Deposit Essentials and all applicable systems effectively to process applications, review member relationships, document loan decisions, maintain records, and support lending operations.

· Identify opportunities to deepen member relationships through appropriate lending and deposit solutions while maintaining a member-focused approach. Ensure loan applications are for solutions of value for our membership in relation to their goals.

· Respond to member and employee inquiries regarding loan status, underwriting decisions, loan documentation requirements, and credit union lending solutions.

· Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, credit union policies, underwriting standards, and internal controls.

· Assist with quality control reviews, audits, examinations, and reporting requirements related to consumer lending activities.

· Support continuous improvement initiatives and recommend enhancements to lending processes, workflows, and member service standards.

· Maintain a working knowledge of consumer lending regulations, underwriting practices, credit union products, and industry best practices.

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience:

· Three to five years of consumer lending, underwriting, loan processing, or financial services experience preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of consumer lending regulations, credit analysis, loan documentation, and underwriting principles required.

Education:

· High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field preferred.

Interpersonal Skills:

· Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential. The successful candidate must demonstrate attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while providing exceptional member service.

· Obtaining cooperation internally with TDFCU team members and externally with vendors is a critical part of the job.

Other Skills:

· Strong analytical, decision-making, organizational, and communication skills are essential.

· Ability to exercise sound judgment while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

· Proficiency using Portico, Loancierge, Client Central, Originate, and Deposit Essentials systems is strongly preferred. A clear understanding of Microsoft 365 is required.

Location:

· On-site, located in Washington DC.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
