Summary
The ideal candidate for the position of Church Administrator is a professional who presents a welcoming presence as the senior administrator for Mariners’ Church of Detroit. A commitment to demonstrating Christian values and virtues is critical in supporting the mission of the church and its ministries.
The ideal candidate is responsible for overseeing the daily administrative and operational functions of the church. This position requires an above average commitment to details related to, community service, operational budgets, internal and external communications, records management, and general support to the parishioners and fellow team members.
This ideal candidate must be reliable, flexible, and available to work non-traditional hours. Although specific hours are listed Sunday-Thursday, the candidate must be flexible to accommodate the church schedule, which sometimes happens outside those hours.
They must be trustworthy and diligent in protecting the integrity and confidentiality of Mariners’ Church of Detroit and those whom we serve.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative Leadership
- Manage the operations of the church office and church services.
- Develop and maintain office procedures and administrative systems.
- Coordinate church calendars, meetings, and events.
- Maintain church records, membership database, and official documents.
- Prepare reports for church leadership and board meetings.
Financial Administration
- Assist with budgeting and financial planning.
- Maintain financial records and work with the church treasurer and bookkeeper.
- Ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.
- Complete annual general insurance renewal.
Human Resources
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and personnel documentation.
- Maintain employee files and benefits records.
- Coordinate volunteer background checks and training records to comply with the child safety policy.
- Support staff scheduling and performance documentation.
Facilities Management
- Schedule facility use by ministries, outside groups, and tours.
- Oversee vendor contracts and service providers.
- Ensure church property is safe, clean, and well-maintained.
Communications
- Oversee church communications including newsletters, bulletins, website updates, and social media.
- Coordinate church-wide announcements.
- Assist with event promotion and ministry communications.
- Provide technical support for all church services, staff email concerns, and conference room operating systems.
- Liaison for the downtown Detroit community at large and the maritime industry in support of our mission and ministry.
Ministry Support
- Provide administrative support to the rector and ministry leaders (on staff and volunteers).
- Recruit volunteers for all areas of the Church in conjunction with ministry leaders (on staff and volunteers), through phone calls, emails and personal meetings throughout the week.
- On-site support for Sunday and special services.
- Coordinate weddings, funerals, and special events including additional church services.
- Coordinate registrations, reservations, and event logistics.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Ministry, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- Three to five years of administrative or office management experience.
- Experience in a church or nonprofit environment preferred.
- Financial management experience is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, Mailchimp, Outlook, Church Community Builder/Pushpay (church management software), Zoom and Apple (iMac and MacBook) computers.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Strong problem-solving and leadership abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to use standard office equipment.

Salary/Start Date
- Mariners’ Church offers a competitive salary based on experience.
- Employment is expected to begin on or around September 1.
Pay: From $60,000.00 per year
