Full Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The NIH Clinical Center has a requirement to provide consistent and reliable Medical Support Assistant staffing for the Nursing Department (ND) and Patient Support Services Department at the NIH Clinical Center. The functions performed by the Medical Support Assistants are critical to supporting the NIH clinical research mission of providing humane and healing patient care and an environment for clinical researchers to advance clinical science.

MSA’s will be interacting in-person and by phone with patients, visitors, physicians, nurses and other staff and it is important that they provide outstanding, consistent customer service for all customers. Patients that are seen at the NIH Clinical Center may be anxious, fearful, sick, have physical deformities, etc. In addition, many of the patients and families are not from the local area and this sometimes creates additional anxiety. It is extremely important that the MSA’s maintain a consistent high level of customer service and convey understanding, responsiveness, care, and compassion.

Position location is the NIH Clinical Center at 10 Center Dr, Bethesda, MD 20892.

Multiple Shifts Available: Full-time Day and Evening Shifts, Weekend Shifts

SCOPE / RESPONSIBILITIES

Greet, register, and assist patients and visitors.
Schedule, reschedule, and cancel patient appointments.
Support admissions, check-in, and outpatient registration.
Answer telephones and coordinate interpreter or transportation services.
Maintain accurate patient information and electronic records.
Prepare patient paperwork, reports, and administrative documentation.
Assist with patient travel vouchers and reimbursement documentation.
Monitor patient wait times and communicate with clinical personnel.
Maintain patient privacy and provide courteous, compassionate service.
Float between assigned departments based on staffing needs.

The position may involve scheduling, reception, admissions, patient records, travel support, data entry, reporting, and other administrative functions based on the assigned clinical area.

QUALIFICATIONS

U.S. Citizen
High school diploma or GED
At least one year of experience working directly with patients in a healthcare setting.
Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
Strong customer service, communication, and computer skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Ability to satisfy NIH background, credentialing, medical, and training requirements.
Experience with patient registration, medical scheduling, admissions, or electronic medical records is preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

MSAs are considered essential personnel and may be required to report during inclement weather, Government closures, holidays, or other emergency situations. The work may involve frequent walking, computer use, and carrying records or equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Selected candidates must satisfy NIH pre-employment medical, vaccination, tuberculosis-screening, drug-testing, and occupational health documentation requirements before beginning work.
