Full Job Description

Because Science is a fun reimagining of what a science gift shop can be. As both makers and retailers, we’re a group of creative nerds that seek to bridge science & art and share that enthusiasm with our customers. Circuit Breaker Labs, located at Because Science, is small but has nearly 20 years of experience. We make handmade art, accessories, jewelry, and home goods from recycled circuit boards and electronic components. We like to have fun and don’t take things too seriously, but we work diligently and efficiently to meet our goals.

The Because Science production team (studio and store) is seeking a Full time Production Assistant to assist in meeting production and fulfillment.

Compensation and Benefit Details:

Compensation:

Starting rate is $18.50/hour, raised to $19.50 after completing the 90 day probationary period where you receive on-the-job training.
Further raises are awarded based on merit and performance.
There is room for advancement.
Annual bonus

Benefits:

Full Time employees are eligible to join our employer-sponsored ($250/month) health insurance plan after completing the 90 day probationary period. If the employee elects to decline health insurance, we will instead offer a $1.15 raise. This insurance includes basic eye care.
Paid time off is offered after completing the 90 day probationary period, accruing 8 hours PTO for every 200 hours worked.
Employees are offered an employee discount of 50% off Circuit Breaker Labs products and 20% off all other Because Science merchandise.

Job Information:

Job Location: Studio/Store at 1759 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009
Job Schedule: Studio Hours may vary between 11pm-8pm with a Monday-Friday work week.

Job Expectation:

Report to the Production team for the daily task list. What you’re asked to do may include, but is not limited to:

Main Tasks:

Preparing circuit boards using hand tools (manual task, requires standing)
Using computer-controlled machinery (CNC experience preferred for this task)
Using hand tools to fine trim/clean pieces for use (X-Acto knife experience preferred)
Cleaning, gluing, and mounting circuit board pieces
Framing the finished mounted circuit board products
Finishing touches on products including gluing, adding cords, peeling paper, applying stickers, packaging, and/or barcoding
Perform quality control inspections while working on tasks
Working with computer design/photoshop
Photographing finished works
Sorting, organizing, and restocking materials
Fulfilling online orders by pulling, packing, and/or shipping
Receiving and processing store inventory
Help maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workspace
Assist owner, managers, and other colleagues with various simple, routine tasks as necessary

Training is provided. BUT if you have appropriate skills that would make you an outstanding candidate, please bring them to our attention. (even if it is just a “hobby”, it could be valuable to us!)

Candidate must:

Be able to successfully follow direction, as well as manage tasks and responsibilities with a minimum to no of supervision with efficiency
Be VERY attentive to details
Adhere to attendance schedule; communicate changes promptly and clearly to Studio Manager
Have means of travel (personal car, metro, Uber, etc.) There is no parking available to studio assistants
Adhere to proper PPE policy
Physically able to push, pull, lift up to 50lbs and prep materials with hand and electrical tools
Must be able to stand at least 1-2 hours at a time

Qualifications:

Very detail-oriented
Fast learner with the ability to retain information and maintain efficiency
Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
A background in arts or crafting
Ability to use Slack, ClickUp, Gmail, Photoshop, Shopify
Strong sense of urgency when needed
Ability to express time management and independent working skills
