Full Job Description

Our shop address is 4500 Cherry Hill Road, Arlington Virginia. We are located on the corner of N. Woodstock Street and Cherry Hill Road (road formerly called Lee Highway) in the Lee Heights Shopping Center.

The Front of House Sales Associate is responsible for providing outstanding customer service while creating a welcoming bakery experience. This position assists customers with purchases, processes transactions, fulfills orders, maintains attractive product displays, and ensures the bakery's front-of-house operations remain clean, organized, and fully stocked. The Sales Associate serves as the face of the bakery and plays a key role in building customer loyalty through friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCustomer Service

Greet every customer promptly with a friendly and professional attitude.
Provide exceptional customer service throughout each interaction.
Answer questions about bakery products, ingredients, allergens, and daily specials.
Recommend products and suggest complementary items to increase sales.
Accurately take customer orders for pastries, breads, cakes, beverages, and special orders.
Assist customers with custom cake inquiries and explain ordering procedures.
Resolve customer concerns professionally and escalate issues to management when necessary.
Thank every customer and invite them to return.

Sales & Cash Handling

Operate the Point-of-Sale (POS) system accurately.
Process cash, credit card, gift card, and digital payment transactions.
Balance the cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift.
Issue receipts, refunds, and exchanges according to company policy.
Maintain accuracy while handling money and customer transactions.
Promote seasonal items, promotions, and loyalty programs.

Product Knowledge

Learn all bakery products, including breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, desserts, beverages, and specialty items.
Understand product ingredients and common allergens.
Stay informed about new products and seasonal offerings.
Communicate product availability and production times to customers.

Display & Merchandising

Restock display cases throughout the day.
Rotate products using First In, First Out (FIFO) procedures.
Monitor product freshness and remove products that no longer meet quality standards.
Maintain attractive, clean, and organized display cases.
Ensure pricing labels and product signage are accurate and current.

Order Fulfillment

Prepare customer orders accurately and efficiently.
Package baked goods to maintain freshness and presentation.
Verify custom orders before customer pickup.
Coordinate with production staff to ensure special orders are completed on time.
Assist with online, phone, and delivery orders.

Cleaning & Sanitation

Maintain a clean and organized front counter, dining area, and customer service stations.
Clean display cases, counters, tables, chairs, windows, and beverage stations.
Sweep and mop floors as assigned.
Empty trash and recycling containers regularly.
Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures.
Wash and sanitize utensils, trays, and small equipment as needed.

Opening Duties

Unlock and prepare the bakery for business (if assigned).
Turn on lights, music, display case lighting, and POS equipment.
Stock pastry cases and beverage stations.
Verify pricing and product labels.
Brew coffee and prepare beverage stations.
Ensure the bakery is clean and ready before opening.

Closing Duties

Restock products for the following day as directed.
Clean and sanitize all front-of-house areas.
Empty trash and clean beverage equipment.
Count and reconcile the cash drawer.
Turn off equipment, lights, music, and secure the bakery according to closing procedures.
Complete end-of-day cleaning and closing checklists.

Teamwork

Communicate effectively with kitchen and production staff.
Assist coworkers during busy periods.
Support bakery operations wherever needed.
Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
Maintain a positive, respectful, and professional attitude.

Qualifications

Previous customer service, retail, café, or bakery experience preferred.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Basic math and cash-handling abilities.
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented.
Willingness to learn bakery products and procedures.
Ability to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Physical Requirements

Stand and walk for extended periods.
Lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
Bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the shift.
Work in a fast-paced retail environment.

Maintain an accurate cash drawer and transaction records.
