Managing Director
ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1976, Joy of Motion Dance Center (“JOMDC”) is one of Washington’s leading dance education institutions. Joy of Motion cultivates a diverse community of students, educators, artists, and audiences in the DC metropolitan area by providing creative experiences that open doors for all ages and abilities. JOMDC is currently beyond COVID recovery and sees itself in a “discovery” stage. It seeks individuals with creative energy and vision to be part of this discovery. JOB DESCRIPTION
The full-time Managing Director will serve in an outward-facing capacity to support the growth and development of the organization. This experienced and enthusiastic individual will have a range of duties based on programmatic phases and evolving organizational needs.
Title: Managing Director
Reports to: The Board of Directors
Employment Status: Full-time, exempt
Compensation: $70,000 – $80,000 commensurate with experience
Target Start Date: December 2023 or until the permanent position is filled
Work Environment
This position is a Hybrid position working out of the Washington, DC studio/office: in-person a minimum of 3 days per week and remotely 2 days per week. Candidates are expected to work 40-hour weeks, including some Saturdays and occasional evenings with two Saturdays off per month.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Finance
- Create annual budgets
- Prepare budget actuals for the prior fiscal year and projections for the current fiscal year
- Review final financial reports at the end of the fiscal year
- Pay monthly bills
- Complete monthly income and expense statements
- Process payroll bi-weekly
- Assist with updating the Chart of Accounts weekly
- Monthly Cash Flow Analysis
- Track free program offerings
- Approve non-budgeted expenses
Human Resources
- Regularly review job descriptions and assess hiring needs
- Update Staff and Employee handbooks as needed
- Interview applicants
- Send Letters of Intent, Offer Letters, and Contracts to new hires
- Send new hire paperwork
- Add new hires to the payroll system
- Maintain HR folders for employees and contractors
- Creation/Maintenance of onboarding system for all new hires (staff, faculty, etc.)
- Create and post job descriptions
- Oversee hiring process for administrative and teaching staff
Development
- Develop relationships with prospective funders
- Establish relationships with community members and organizations
- Continue and further relationships with current and past funders
- Submit interim and final grant reports as needed
- Submit grant acceptance materials
- Responsibly manage grants and contributed revenue: restricted and unrestricted
- Assist with grant writing
- Research potential funders
- Maintain donor database
Programming
- Plan long-range programming for youth and adults for the current and following year
- Oversee inclusive planning with staff and faculty for immediate and long-range programming
- Continually assess programmatic output for adjustments and opportunities
- Assist the Artistic Director with the development and execution of the organizational vision
- Ensure all programming is entered into the scheduling software
- Create new programs and special events
- Oversee enrollment data and make program adjustments as needed
- Design and execute a community engagement program
- Create community partnerships, outreach programs, and collaborations
Operations
- Assess, evaluate, and update policies and procedures as needed
- Assist Studio Managers with execution and accountability of policies and procedures
- Update the old and current websites
- Update and maintain the JOMDC app
- Coordinate the Studio Manager schedule(s)
- Recruit, hire, and supervise interns and volunteers
- Lead weekly staff meetings
- Maintain Google Drive folders
Communications
- Develop company message and branding
- Ensure consistency in communications including print, electronic, and social media
- Assess and continually improve communication methods to staff and constituents
- Provide content for monthly newsletter
- Send social media needs to the communications consultant
- Create and maintain a press list
- Create ad hoc eblasts
- Approve print and electronic communications/marketing materials
Board Communications
- Prepare quarterly reports to present to the Board of Directors
- Invite Board members to special events
- Respond to Board requests for information and explanations
Other duties as assigned by the JOMDC Board of Directors
QUALIFICATIONS
While we understand that not one person may have all the listed skills, we are looking for those with experience and who are eager to learn and continue to grow professionally.
Experience
- Arts administration/non-profit background and experience
- Understanding of dance field and particular familiarity with the arts/dance scene in the DMV
- Knowledge of fundraising strategies and funder/donor relations unique to nonprofits
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- At least four years of demonstrated customer service experience and superior skills working with the public.
- At least four+ years of office administration or management experience.
- Basic knowledge and some experience using social media platforms.
- Prior experience working with Dance Studio software, Macs, and Microsoft Office
Software preferred.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends, including Saturdays

- Skills to collaborate with, as well as motivate, board members and other volunteers

- Proficiency in Google Workspace
- Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Background in dance preferred.
- Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19
