Bioinformatics Scientist I – Neuroimmunology

The Allen Institute accelerates science for a healthier world through large-scale research designed to answer some of the most complex questions in biology. Our multi-disciplinary teams generate foundational knowledge, tools, and data to understand how our brain, cells, and immune system work. We share our work openly so others can build on it, move faster, and ask bigger questions. We drive discovery forward and create new possibilities for improving human health.

The goal of the Immunology accelerator is to create a deep, high-resolution reference for the human immune system in both health and disease, ultimately providing the data that will accelerate the development of diagnostics and therapies and serve as a hypothesis-generating sandbox for the entire scientific community.

We are searching for a Bioinformatics Scientist I - Neuroimmunology to analyze multi-omics data to gain new biological insights in neuroimmunology. Reporting to the Director of Informatics & Computational Biology at the Allen Institute for Immunology, the ideal candidate is a self-motivated team player who can work closely with immunologists and bioinformaticians, is an expert in analyzing multi-omics data, and has a track record of discovering novel biological insights. The successful candidate will also have excellent communication skills that can represent our efforts to our stakeholders internally and in external forums.

Essential Functions

Analyze multi-omics data from neuroimmunology projects, including but not limited to: spatial transcriptomics, scRNA-seq, proteomics, flow cytometry, and/or imaging
Work closely with cross-functional teams to discover new insights in neuroimmunology, either as an independent contributor or as a project leader under minimal supervision
Write reports, research papers, patent applications, and other documents
Represent our efforts to our stakeholders internally and in external forums
Contribute to a rigorously scientific, cohesive and efficient team environment

Required Education and Experience

PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology; or PhD in immunology or neuroscience, or related disciplines including molecular biology and cell biology with extensive bioinformatics experience; or equivalent combination of degree and experience

Preferred Education and Experience

Demonstrated experience in analyzing diverse omics data, including but not limited to: spatial transcriptomics, scRNA-seq, proteomics, flow cytometry, and/or imaging
Previous experience in neuroimmunology
Familiar with Spatial Biology technologies
A track record of discovering novel biological insights from omics data
Foundational knowledge of bioinformatics
Experience with R and/or Python
Strong publication record
Familiar with advanced statistical methods and machine learning for biomarker discovery
Experience working in a cross disciplinary, team-based environment
Experience working with outside collaborators to achieve defined objectives
Familiarity with cloud computing and/or Linux
Experience using Git or similar version control system
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills
Good problem-solving skills, curious and eager to take on new challenges
Able to work independently as well as in a collaborative high paced environment
The successful candidate must be self-motivated, a team player, attentive to details, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously

Work Environment

May enter laboratory environment - possible exposure to chemical, biological, or other hazardous substances

Physical Demands

Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment; repetitive motion with lab equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Occasional evening and weekend hours required
This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State

Travel

Attendance and participation in national and international conferences may be required

Annualized Salary Range

$92,250 - $114,100 *

Final salary depends on required education for the role, experience, and level of skills relevant to the role, along with work location, where applicable.
