Full Job Description

Job Summary: The Accountant III performs advanced professional accounting work supporting the financial operations of Chehalis Tribal Enterprises and its subsidiary enterprises. This position is responsible for preparing and analyzing financial information, maintaining the general ledger, performing complex account reconciliations, preparing journal entries, assisting with month- and year-end closing processes, supporting budgeting activities, and preparing financial statements and reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

The Accountant III analyzes financial data, identifies and resolves accounting discrepancies, assists with internal and external audits, and recommends improvements to accounting processes and internal controls. This position works independently on complex accounting assignments, serves as a technical resource within the Accounting Department, and supports the Controller in maintaining accurate financial reporting and the organization's financial integrity.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

A. Complete complex account reconciliations that span multiple accounting systems and review supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness.

B. Prepare accrual, reversing, adjusting, and correcting journal entries.

C. Prepare bank reconciliations for CTE and/or its subsidiary enterprises.

D. Assist in developing benchmarks and financial metrics for operational and statistical reporting.

E. Work effectively under strict deadlines while managing multiple priorities and assignments.

F. Conduct cost-benefit, financial trend, and break-even analyses for projects and operational initiatives as assigned.

G. Perform detailed account analysis, reconcile general ledger accounts, and facilitate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.

H. Prepare, reconcile, and maintain the accuracy of the general ledger for CTE and its subsidiary enterprises.

I. Assist with the preparation of annual budgets and import budget data into the financial system to support departmental and consolidated reporting.

J. Coordinate the retrieval and analysis of financial data from the accounting system and prepare reports for management.

K. Recommend improvements to accounting procedures, financial reporting processes, and internal controls to improve operational efficiency and accuracy.

L. Assist in preparing financial reports that summarize and forecast organizational financial performance based on historical trends, current operations, and projected activities.

M. Provide management with timely financial analyses regarding the financial condition and performance of CTE and its subsidiary enterprises.

N. Research and assist in implementing accounting and tax reporting changes resulting from new accounting standards or regulatory requirements.

O. Coordinate audit requests and prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for internal and external auditors.

P. Prepare and assist in the issuance of financial statements and reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable regulatory requirements.

Q. Coordinate with banks, financial institutions, and external partners regarding assigned accounting and financial matters.

R. Review and prepare manual check requests and supporting documentation in accordance with established approval policies and internal controls.

S. May be assigned duties under the Chehalis Tribe Emergency Management Plan and Program.

T. Attend and participate in department meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities as requested.

U. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision:

A. Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Controller and exercises independent judgment in carrying out assigned responsibilities.

B. Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Minimum Qualifications:

A. Education: A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required. Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or other relevant professional certification is preferred but not required.

B. Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience required. Experience with financial statement preparation, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, budgeting, and month-end and year-end closing processes is required. Experience in a multi-entity organization and with Sage Intacct or a similar ERP accounting system is preferred.

C. Skills & Abilities:

1) Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business correspondence, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, and financial reports. Ability to prepare reports, business correspondence, policies, and procedures. Ability to effectively present financial information and respond to questions from management, employees, auditors, vendors, and other stakeholders.

2) Mathematical: Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, financial reporting, fixed

assets, payroll accounting, and internal controls. Ability to analyze financial data, prepare complex reconciliations, interpret financial statements, and perform mathematical calculations involving percentages, ratios, allocations, and financial analysis. Advanced spreadsheet skills are required.

3) Computer Skills: Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook. Experience using enterprise accounting software, including Sage Intacct, ADP, and other financial management systems. Ability to prepare complex spreadsheets, financial reports, and data analysis with a high degree of accuracy.

4) Reasoning Ability: Ability to identify problems, gather and analyze financial information, evaluate alternatives, and develop practical solutions. Ability to interpret accounting standards, policies, and technical information while exercising sound judgment and independent decision-making in completing complex accounting assignments.

5) Accuracy: Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting, and internal controls. Ability to organize work, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality while producing accurate work with minimal supervision.

6) Interpersonal Relations/Customer Service: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, auditors, vendors, financial institutions, and external agencies. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to provide professional customer service while maintaining confidentiality and exercising sound judgment. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage competing priorities under deadlines.
