Full Job Description

Position: Phlebotomy Technician

Job Type: PRN

Location: Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Tacoma, WA

Work Hours: M-F schedule

QUALIFICATIONS

Clearance:

Must be able to obtain security clearance to work in a military treatment center

Education: High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program or two-part phlebotomy program.

Certification: Certification/registration through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or other equivalent certification. BLS certification is also required.

Experience: Must have performed 40 hours of classroom training, 100 hours of clinical training and 100 successful venipuncture (including skin punctures). Must have experience working as a phlebotomy technician (phlebotomist) in the preceding 2 years.

TYPE OF WORK

The duties include but are not limited to the following:

· Draws blood samples on adults, children, and infants to include newborns. Patients range from minimally to critically ill and the physically and mentally challenged.

· Informs patients on specimen collection procedures to be performed. Reviews laboratory request slips to ensure all required information is present. Determines types of specimens to be collected and if proper patient preparation has been accomplished.

· Selects appropriate venipuncture site and cleans to ensure contamination-free field, considering any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions if indicated by patient or doctor. Selects appropriate needle size and type (i.e., multi-draw needle, butterfly, etc.) and determines if specimen should be collected by vacutainer system or syringe.

· Performs routine and complicated venipuncture, including the median veins of the arms and hands. Multiple samples from a singular puncture site may be required. For children and infants, makes determination whether to utilize a finger or heel stick for specimen collections or when deemed necessary by specimen requirement, performs venous sticks.

· Draws medical blood alcohols when directed by appropriate command and legal authorities.

· Applies sterile dressing to site and instructs patients on care required to prevent infection and/or bruising. Provides immediate care to patients who may faint or become nauseous during procedure. Care may encompass the reading of a blood pressure, monitoring of pulse, basic first aid or CPR.

· Collects specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative or clot tubes as required by test requested. For children and infants, collects specimens in appropriate pedi-tubes. Properly and accurately labels specimens, annotating time of collection, ensuring proper collection day and initialing all tubes collected. Accurately separates specimen tubes in section holding bins during workday for sections to retrieve on a timely basis. Maintains specimen viability by proper mixing techniques, refrigeration, incubation or by centrifugation, as deemed necessary by special instructions of specific test.

· Responsible for the delivery of all PRIORITY or STAT specimens to appropriate sections and assures section is aware of specimen status.

· Prepares, monitors, and collects blood for Glucose Tolerance Testing, characterized by a number of stages, fine and precise measurements and interrelated steps. Based on the results of the preliminary evaluation determines if the patient should continue with the testing or be referred to the physician. Administers correct dosage of highly concentrated glucose to patients as required and performs subsequent blood collections at timed intervals. Monitors the patient throughout the test and provides immediate care as needed. Collects specimen requiring additional training: timed serial draws (Forearm Exercise Test), blood cultures using aseptic technique, prisoners or escorted patients, and specimens requiring Positive Patient Identification (PPID) and Positive Accession Identification (PAID). Draws medical blood alcohols when directed by appropriate command and legal authorities.

· Ensures at end of workday that all specimens are removed from central drawing area to appropriate sections or to central processing section. Maintains a clean and sanitary drawing area, restocks supplies as needed and maintains security of controlled items such as needles and syringes.

· Provides training to newly assigned personnel. Instructs and trains phlebotomy students from various technical colleges, military students, and nursing staff in phlebotomy techniques. Areas of concerns include: patient identification, site selection, site preparation, blood collection, specimen labeling, patient care, blood handling techniques and emergency treatment of adverse phlebotomy reactions. Ensures adequate supplies are maintained within the section.

· Greets and screens patients at the laboratory reception desk, securing sufficient information to determine need, eligibility for care and priority for testing. Checks appropriateness of laboratory request slip and logs pertinent information into the hospital Electronic Health Record (EHR)/Laboratory Information System (LIS).

· Provides specific test preparation instructions to be followed and accession specimens based on appointments as needed. Advises patients of laboratory services done in-house and those sent to reference/commercial labs. Verifies patient understanding of instructions and provides appropriate containers for testing as needed. Accepts those specimens hand carried by patients and assures proper information is on all specimens for processing and accessioning.

· Utilizes the automated ticketing system to manage patient flow. Logs in and routes specimens dropped off at the front desk to appropriate sections in accordance with priority of testing. Uses computer terminals to enter patient demographic information and test data and to retrieve information.

· Ensures adequate supplies are maintained within the section.

· Requests services of the rapid response team or Interventional Radiology (IR), Pediatric Sedation Services as needed.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.
