About Us
The Grout Museum District provides an understanding of the world through history and science. We preserve the rich and diverse history of Waterloo and its community, honor the service and sacrifice of Iowa’s veterans from the Civil War through present, gather and share the voices and stories of history makers and those who witnessed it, and inspire curiosity and scientific exploration for future generations through hands-on learning, engaging exhibits, preservation of two historic homes, and a publicly programmed planetarium. Our education programs connect students, families, and community members to the region’s history, science, and human experience — through Museum School, guided tours, public programs, and partnerships with schools and community organizations across the Cedar Valley. The Education Programs Manager is the person who makes those programs run every day.
The Role
The Education Programs Manager owns the day-to-day operations of the Grout Museum District’s education function — coordinating programs, supervising PT Museum Educators, maintaining school and community partnerships, and teaching. Teaching is a genuine expectation of this role, not a backup function. The Education Programs Manager is expected to lead Museum School sessions, conduct tours, and deliver programs directly to student and public audiences alongside the PT educators they supervise. This role reports to the Director of Education & Media Production, who provides strategic direction while focusing primarily on documentary production and oral history work.
What You'll Do
- Manage the day-to-day operations of GMD education programs — scheduling, staffing, preparation, and quality across Museum School, public tours, group visits, and community programs
- Teach — lead Museum School sessions, conduct student and public tours, deliver programs and demonstrations directly to audiences of all ages including youth, families, and school groups
- Supervise PT Museum Educators — scheduling, training, performance feedback, and professional development in coordination with the Director of Education & Media Production
- Build and maintain school and community partnerships — serve as the primary contact for teachers, principals, curriculum coordinators, and community organizations
- Develop and refresh program curriculum in collaboration with the Director of Education & Media Production, Collections & Research Manager, and Oral Historian
- Coordinate planetarium programming logistics in collaboration with the Director of Education & Media Production and Technology Systems Manager
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies, or a related field — teaching experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated comfort and skill in front of audiences — you genuinely enjoy teaching and engaging people of all ages
- Experience in program coordination, curriculum development, or a related educational function
- Strong organizational skills — able to manage program schedules, educator scheduling, and school partnerships simultaneously
- Genuine warmth with students, families, teachers, and community members — this role is highly visible and highly relational
- Experience supervising staff, interns, or volunteers is preferred
What We Offer
- $17.00-19.00 per hour, commensurate with experience
- Full-time schedule – primarily weekdays with occasional evenings and weekends for programs and community events
- Health, eye, and dental insurance, paid time off, pension
- A role at the center of the Grout’s community-facing work – you’ll teach, lead, coordinate, and build relationships that connect locals and travelers to history and science
