Human Resources Director – City of Wausau, Wisconsin

The City of Wausau is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking Human Resources Director to lead our Human Resources Department and provide strategic HR leadership across the organization.

Reporting to the Mayor, the Human Resources Director leads a three-person HR team supporting more than 375 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees. The Director serves as a trusted advisor to City leadership and oversees a broad range of human resources functions, including:

Employee and labor relations, including collective bargaining
Classification, compensation, and employee benefits
Recruitment, retention, and workforce planning
Performance management and organizational development
HR policy development and legal compliance
Risk management, safety, and workers’ compensation
Training and leadership development
HR systems, processes, and continuous improvement

We are looking for a well-rounded HR professional who can build strong relationships, provide sound and practical guidance, and balance strategic leadership with the day-to-day realities of public-sector human resources. The successful candidate will be approachable, decisive, ethical, and comfortable working collaboratively with elected officials, department leaders, employees, and labor representatives.

Starting Annual Salary: $105,913 – $126,464 DOQ

A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Public Administration, or a related field and ten or more years of progressive HR administration experience are required. A master’s degree and SPHR or SHRM-SCP designation are preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
