Full Job Description

People’s Express is a growing nonprofit transportation provider serving Southeast Michigan. Our mission is rooted in compassion, reliable transportation, and a commitment to caring for our clients, communities, as well as one another.

We are seeking a Finance Manager who brings both strong technical financial expertise and professional leadership. This position is not only responsible for accounting accuracy and compliance, but also for leading people, strengthening financial systems, supporting organizational decision-making, and modeling professionalism across the organization.

The ideal candidate is collaborative, accountable, solutions-oriented, and able to work effectively with staff, other leadership, board members, auditors, funders, and community partners. This role requires someone who can uphold high standards, communicate clearly, support team growth, and help foster a respectful and mission-driven workplace culture.

The Finance Manager oversees all accounting and financial operations for People’s Express and Whitmore Lake Area Human Services (our sister food pantry) ensuring responsible stewardship of organizational resources.

Leadership Responsibilities Include

Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes as well as presenting financial statements and analysis regularly
Manage the areas and staff performing A/P, A/R, general ledger management, bank reconciliations, and payroll entries; provide positive and growth-minded leadership
Monitor cash flow, funding utilization, and compliance with grant and funding restrictions
Support funding diversification strategies while maintaining appropriate liquidity and reserve levels
Maintain and assess accounting systems, identify opportunities for improvement, and lead sustainable system changes that strengthen consistency, accountability, and organizational follow-through
Lead planning, preparation, and coordination of annual financial statement audits and Single Audits, including preparation of schedules, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor inquiries; ensure compliance with federal funding
Communicate financial information clearly and effectively, helping other leadership, the Board, and program staff understand financial results, funding restrictions, compliance requirements, risks and operational impacts.

Qualifications Include

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
Advanced degree and/or CPA license or CPA eligibility is a plus
Five years of progressively responsible accounting or financial management experience
Preferably in a nonprofit or government organization
Experience successfully managing a team of accounting professionals
Strong knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
QuickBooks proficiency, including hands-on experience with general ledger management, financial reporting, and grant tracking
Direct experience administering government grants and contracts (federal, state, and local), with demonstrated expertise in allowable costs, funding restrictions, and multi-funding stream reporting requirements
Excellent verbal and written communications skills required, with strong interpersonal effectiveness across diverse audiences

Pay: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
