Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize students' experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff in support of the university's mission.

OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members and up to 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units - the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. OEM strives to provide excellence in access and support to inspiring learners who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Job Summary

The Admissions Assistant Director for the Detroit Office is responsible for planning, producing, executing, and evaluating programming related to the recruitment of Detroit and other urban area students, as well as general leadership of the satellite office. As an office manager, the incumbent provides direct leadership, supervision, management, and mentorship to a team of admissions counselors and an administrative assistant. This position serves as an integral member of the OUA Recruitment and Management Teams, and serves as the primary advisor to the admissions office executive leadership team on all matters concerning the recruitment of Detroit and other urban area students and the U-M Detroit Office.

This position has significant visibility and accountability to the student as the core of recruitment/admissions programming. Serves to provide accessibility in student recruitment/admissions for internal partners such as OUA staff, campus personnel, and external partners such as student family and community liaisons.

Responsibilities*

30% Provide leadership for the recruitment of Detroit and other urban area students to the University of Michigan for undergraduate enrollment. Assignments include management of programming for prospective students. Develop strategic plans for recruiting related students in in-state markets. Analyze institutional and industry statistics, including College Board Enrollment Solutions and ACT Enrollment Management Services to make data-driven decisions and recommendations. Establish and closely supervise the budget to meet short and long-term objectives. Work in collaboration with other assistant directors and management team members to ensure programming is synchronized and complements other recruitment/marketing initiatives. Manage enrollment of programming related to the Summer Bridge Scholars Program.

20% Manage the Detroit Admissions office, admissions counselors, office assistant, work-study student staff, and any other related staff members. Assignments include monitoring programming coordination by staff members, tracking application reviews, supervising work schedules, and following up on budgetary matters. Interview, recommend for hire, train recruitment personnel, and monitor staff progress. Evaluate, recommend salary and merit increases for recruitment staff members. Facilitate mentorship and professional growth for all team members.

10% Coordinate with OEM Operations to manage Detroit Office facilities, tasks, projects, and related operational needs, including support for the office's transition to the University of Michigan Center for Innovation in Summer 2027.

20% Provide information and interpret admissions policies, procedures, decisions, program information, and various university services and student experiences to prospective and admitted students, parents and families, high school counselors, staff, and faculty. Share the University of Michigan message with audiences across the nation through presentations and other modes of communication. Represent the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on professional boards, councils, committees, and within professional meetings.

15% Application Evaluation - Evaluate applications for domestic and international first-year and transfer admission using the University's individualized and comprehensive application evaluation process.

5% Leverage technology to enhance recruitment and marketing communications across the undergraduate admissions funnel, including prospective, applicant, admitted, paid, and enrolled students in both in-state and out-of-state markets. Develop technology-enabled undergraduate admissions funnel reports for Detroit-area student recruitment. Provide advice and feedback on the office's integration of technology for recruitment, marketing, and processing.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree required.
Four years of professional experience related to admissions, recruitment, and/or student services, specifically in higher education.
Previous management/supervisory experience.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to lead and work collaboratively in a team environment.
Sociological knowledge or work experience with youth and families in urban populations is helpful.

Desired Qualifications*

Master's degree.
Familiarity with the policies and procedures of the University of Michigan or other complex, decentralized higher education organizations.
Experience with the Technolutions Slate CRM.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes. The Office of Enrollment Management requires a hybrid work arrangement of minimally three days on-site and two remote days. Thursdays are required as an on-site workday for all.
