Full Job Description

Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and licensed Substance Abuse Counselor to join our clinical team. This role provides high-quality therapeutic services to individuals in our Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs. You will manage a caseload of patients as they transition from acute stabilization toward community reintegration, utilizing evidence-based practices in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment.

The Substance Abuse Counselor works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary treatment team under the supervision of the Clinical Director.

Essential Job Duties

The ideal candidate is capable, motivated, and willing to learn and grow as the position evolves. As a Substance Abuse Counselor, you must be able to:

Facilitate therapeutic, psychoeducational, and skills-based groups related to:
Substance use disorders
Relapse prevention
Coping skills
Life skills
Emotional regulation
Maintain a safe, respectful, and structured group environment
Monitor group dynamics and address disruptive behaviors appropriately
Follow approved curricula and adapt to diverse client needs
Document attendance, participation, and clinical observations in the EHR in a timely and compliant manner
Communicate client progress and concerns with the treatment team
Participate in team meetings, trainings, and case conferences
Ensure compliance with DMHAS, The Joint Commission, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2 regulations
Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment
Conduct thorough intake assessments and diagnostic evaluations using DSM-5 and ASI tools.
Determine appropriate levels of care according to ASAM Criteria.
Lead individual, group, and family therapy sessions utilizing evidence-based approaches like CBT or Motivational Interviewing.
Maintain accurate clinical documentation in electronic health records (EHR) in compliance with HIPAA and NJ state regulations.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or related field preferred

Experience:

Minimum 6 months experience in substance use disorder treatment, behavioral health, or human services
Group facilitation experience preferred
Experience working with dual-diagnosis populations preferred

Licensure/Certification:

LPC, LCSW, LMFT, LSW, LAC, CADC, LCADC, or other relevant New Jersey credential (or actively working toward certification)

Skills & Competencies

Knowledge of substance use disorders and recovery principles
Strong understanding of group dynamics
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain professional boundaries
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Ability to manage group settings effectively

Work Environment

Indoor/outdoor work as needed
Potential exposure to crisis situations
Possible exposure to infectious materials
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs
Ability to respond quickly in emergencies

Schedule may include evenings or weekends
