The Certified Surgical Technologist is an integral member of the office-based procedure team and is responsible for promoting safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care in accordance with applicable Washington State regulations and the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAASF).
This position requires a versatile, motivated professional who is committed to patient safety, infection prevention, and excellence in surgical care. In addition to functioning as the primary scrub technologist during procedures, the Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in sterile processing, equipment maintenance, inventory management, quality assurance, and maintaining accreditation readiness.
Primary Responsibilities:
Surgical Services
- Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures by ensuring proper setup of instruments, equipment, medications, and supplies.
- Establish and maintain a sterile field throughout all procedures.
- Scrub and assist the surgeon by anticipating operative needs and providing appropriate instrumentation.
- Perform surgical counts with the circulating nurse according to facility policy.
- Assist with patient positioning while maintaining patient dignity and preventing injury.
- Properly handle and label surgical specimens.
- Assist with room turnover following established infection prevention procedures.
Sterile Processing
- Clean, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, and store surgical instruments and equipment according to manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs) and facility policy.
- Operate steam sterilizers and other sterilization equipment safely and accurately.
- Perform and document biological, chemical, and mechanical sterilization monitoring.
- Identify damaged instruments and coordinate repairs or replacement.
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of sterile storage areas.
Additional Responsibilities as directed by clinical manager:
- Infection prevention
- Routine inspection and maintenance of equipment
- Routine inventory and supply management
- Emergency preparedness
Professional Responsibilities
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and accountability.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.
- Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and administrative staff.
- Maintain current certification and required continuing education.
- Perform additional duties within the scope of certification and training as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential or other nationally recognized surgical technologist certification recognized under Washington State law.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterile technique, infection prevention, and sterile processing.
- Strong organizational, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
Preferred
- Two or more years of surgical technologist experience in plastic surgery, ambulatory surgery, or an office-based surgery center.
- Experience with sterile processing and instrument reprocessing.
- Familiarity with AAASF accreditation standards.
- Experience participating in quality improvement or accreditation activities.
Plastic surgery experience is welcomed but not required.
