Position Overview
Sustainable NCW (SNCW) is seeking an Outreach & Education Coordinator to support community education, outreach, volunteer coordination, and sustainability programs throughout Chelan and Douglas Counties.
This position is a hands-on community-facing role supporting SNCW's Communications Manager and Executive Director in delivering outreach programs and connecting with schools, businesses, volunteers, community organizations, and event organizers. The Coordinator will help deliver recycling and composting education, coordinate volunteers and event waste-reduction efforts, and support a variety of community sustainability initiatives as opportunities and funding arise.
The ideal candidate is organized, approachable, comfortable speaking with a wide range of community members, and excited about hands-on environmental education and community engagement.
Key ResponsibilitiesEducation & School Outreach
- Contact schools, teachers, and school administrators to schedule recycling and composting education opportunities.
- Deliver recycling and composting lessons to 4th grade classrooms.
- Assist with development, preparation, and improvement of educational materials and activities.
- Support additional education opportunities related to waste reduction, water quality, energy conservation, and other SNCW programs as available.
- Promote SNCW educational resources and videos through schools and community partners.
Community Outreach & Events
- Assist the Communications Manager with outreach projects and community engagement activities.
- Represent SNCW at community events, fairs, festivals, and other outreach opportunities.
- Provide outreach and education about SNCW programs, including recycling, composting, waste reduction, and other sustainability initiatives.
- Support promotion and community engagement around educational resources and videos created through SNCW grant-funded projects.
Towards Zero Waste Events
- Coordinate volunteers for Towards Zero Waste (TZW) events.
- Provide on-the-ground coordination and support for waste reduction, recycling, and composting at small, one-day community events.
- Communicate with event organizers and volunteers to ensure TZW plans are implemented successfully.
- Assist with equipment preparation, transportation, setup, monitoring, and breakdown as needed.
- Help track participation, materials collected, and other program outcomes.
Community Recycling Programs
Depending on available funding and program needs:
- Assist with day-of glass recycling collection events, potentially occurring 1–2 Saturdays per month.
- Support public hours at the Leavenworth Recycling Center, including helping recruit, train, and mentor volunteers to assist with or eventually lead open hours.
- Conduct recycling education and outreach at multifamily residential properties where recycling service is already available.
- Support outreach and education related to Washington State organics management requirements and technical assistance for businesses that generate organic waste.
General Program Support
- Assist with outreach, education, and implementation of SNCW programs and grant-funded projects.
- Maintain accurate records of outreach activities, participation, volunteer hours, and other program outcomes.
- Assist with preparation of outreach materials, presentations, and supplies.
- Build positive relationships with schools, businesses, community organizations, volunteers, and members of the public.
- Perform other outreach and education duties as needed.
- Support ongoing management and maintenance of SNCW's Waste Wizard online recycling search tool.
Qualifications
Required:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable speaking with students, teachers, volunteers, businesses, and members of the public.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and schedules.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating closely with a small team.
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout Chelan and Douglas Counties.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for events and programs.
- Commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Preferred:
- Experience with environmental education, community outreach, waste reduction, recycling, composting, or related programs.
- Experience working with schools, youth, volunteers, or community events.
- Experience facilitating educational activities or public presentations.
- Spanish language skills.
- Familiarity with local communities and organizations in North Central Washington.
Work Environment & Schedule
This is a part-time position averaging 20–25 hours per week with a flexible schedule. Work will take place in schools, community spaces, events, recycling facilities, and SNCW's office, with a combination of independent work and collaboration with SNCW staff.
Some evenings and weekends will be required depending on school schedules, community events, recycling collection events, and other program needs.
