Full Job Description

General Summary

The Crisis Chat & Text Specialist provides essential support to individuals experiencing emotional distress and mental health crises through online chat and text messaging platforms as part of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline program.

The Crisis Chat & Text Specialist must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, empathy, sound judgment, crisis intervention skills, and proficiency with computer-based systems. This is a non-supervisory position.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Crisis Chat & Text Specialist is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

· Provide Support and Crisis Intervention: Offer compassionate, nonjudgmental support through key crisis counseling approaches, including active listening, collaborative problem-solving, and emotional support, in accordance with 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Suicide Safety Policy standards.

· Safety Assessment and De-escalation: Assess help-seeker safety risk levels using established protocols and respond appropriately through emotional support, de-escalation, crisis intervention, and other established practices.

· Safety Planning and Resource Referrals: Assist help-seekers with developing individualized safety plans when appropriate. Provide referrals to community, state, and national resources based on each help-seeker’s needs, including mobile crisis teams, emergency departments, community mental health centers, outpatient behavioral health providers, substance use services, and other appropriate supports.

· Empowerment and Advocacy: Promote resilience and a sense of agency by identifying and reinforcing each help-seeker’s strengths, preferred coping strategies, existing supports, and ability to navigate barriers.

· Collaboration and Protocol Adherence: Collaborate with other crisis professionals and appropriate internal and external partners to address high-risk situations, including situations requiring emergency services intervention, while following established 988 and organizational protocols.

· Documentation and Follow-Up: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of interactions in accordance with organizational policies, documentation guidelines, privacy requirements, and 988 program standards. Conduct follow-up contacts when appropriate and consistent with program protocols.

· Training and Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training, coaching, quality improvement activities, and professional development opportunities to maintain and enhance crisis counseling and technology-based communication skills.

· Other Duties: Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

The skills, abilities, and education requirements listed below serve as the minimum qualifications for the Crisis Chat & Text Specialist role:

· Crisis Counseling Skills: Ability to apply active listening, crisis assessment, de-escalation, collaborative problem-solving, and other relevant crisis counseling skills, with demonstrated capacity to engage, assess, and collaborate effectively with help-seekers from diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.

· Mental Health Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with local, state, and national mental health resources, including crisis support services, inpatient and outpatient behavioral health care, community mental health services, substance use services, co-occurring conditions, and resources for family members and caregivers.

· Written Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and empathetically through written communication. Ability to convey warmth, professionalism, and emotional support through text-based interactions.

· Technological Proficiencies: Strong command of computer and other technological systems, with the ability to navigate multiple online platforms and applications. Must be able to type at least 50 words per minute (WPM) while maintaining accuracy and professionalism in text-based communication and documentation.

· Multitasking and Organization: Ability to manage multiple information systems and competing demands while maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, and responsiveness during high-volume or high-acuity periods.

· Confidentiality and Professionalism: Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with organizational policies, applicable privacy requirements, and 988 program standards when handling sensitive help-seeker information.

· Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma/equivalent combined with relevant lived experience as a mental health peer, consumer, or caregiver and/or relevant crisis-support experience.

· Applied Experience: Experience providing support through telehealth, online chat, text messaging, crisis hotlines, peer support, behavioral health services, or other technology-mediated communication is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The Crisis Chat & Text Specialist works in a hybrid environment, with responsibilities performed remotely and in person at the Springfield, NJ office. The position involves responding to incoming messages through online chat and text platforms and requires extended periods of sitting, computer and mobile-device use, and screen time, including sustained typing and written communication. The work schedule includes evenings, weekends, and some holidays to support continuous coverage of crisis chat and text services.
