Fraud Mitigation Specialist

Non-Exempt

The Fraud Mitigation Specialist is responsible for monitoring, investigating, and resolving suspected fraudulent activity across all credit union channels, including, but not limited to, deposits, withdrawals, digital banking, share branching, Zelle, ACH, card services, and account transactions. This role ensures timely detection, accurate documentation, and effective prevention of fraud while protecting members and safeguarding the credit union’s financial integrity.

Responsible for reviewing, performing, and/or investigating fraud to mitigate risk and reduce credit union losses, including:

External transfers
Debit card disputes
Check fraud
Zelle
Incoming/outgoing wire transfers
Mobile deposit capture
ATM/ITM deposits
Police investigations
Investigating deposit and loan alerts in the FCRM system and determining if a CTR or SAR requires a report to be filed.
Processing and tracking fraud claims within established timeframes according to NACHA, Reg E, card network rules, and internal policies.
Initiating stop‑payments, account blocks, holds, or closures when necessary to prevent further loss.
Provide recommendations to management on account restrictions, additional verification, or system changes.
Assisting with preparation of SARs when fraud activity meets reporting thresholds.
Assisting with preparation of CTRs.
Maintaining accurate records of fraud investigations and preparing internal reports for management and audits.
Coordinating with the Designated BSA Officer to ensure that required suspicious activities reports are filed accurately and timely.

Recommending effective fraud detection and prevention strategies to mitigate fraud losses while ensuring an appropriate balance between risk and member experience.

Adherence to GCFCU policies and procedures as well as state and federal rules and regulations such as BSA, Reg. CC, OFAC, TISA, Information Security, etc.

Qualifications

2+ years in financial institution operations and fraud field or financial crimes.
Knowledge of BSA, OFAC, and AML laws, rules, and regulations.
Effective communication skills (both oral and written).
Ability to manage highly confidential information professionally and with appropriate discretion.
Knowledge of and ability to employ internal controls to enhance business strategies for the purpose of detecting, correcting, and preventing fraudulent activities.
Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, data review, and time management skills.
Knowledge of credit union products and services.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Strong understanding of fraud schemes related to ACH, checks, digital banking, cards, and account takeovers.
Working knowledge of credit union operations, share branching, and regulatory requirements (Reg E, NACHA, BSA/AML, OFAC).
Ability to analyze complex data and identify patterns or anomalies.
Strong decision‑making skills with sound judgment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
