Job Description
The Business Development Director is responsible for expanding the credit union’s commercial lending presence and indirect lending partnerships. This can be achieved by developing, cultivating, and maintaining relationships with business members, prospective members, local dealerships, and community referral partners. This role focuses on generating qualified opportunities for member business loans (e.g., commercial real estate, C&I, lines of credit, equipment financing—aligned to the credit union’s program) and delivering a consultative, relationship-based experience from initial outreach through closing.
The Business Development Director will manage the commercial loan process from application through closing in collaboration with Underwriting/Credit, Loan Operations, Branch/Member Services, and Marketing to ensure an exceptional member experience, strong credit quality, and adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, and credit union policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute an outreach strategy to grow commercial lending relationships within the credit union’s field of membership and target markets.
- Identifies and cultivates new business member relationships through networking, community involvement, and strategic partner development.
- Establishes and maintains a robust referral network with key centers of influence (e.g., CPAs, attorneys, commercial realtors, property managers, chambers/associations, economic development groups, insurance professionals).
- Represents the credit union at business and community events to strengthen brand awareness, increase membership, and generate commercial lending opportunities.
- Conducts discovery meetings with business members/prospects to understand operating model, financing needs, cash flow considerations, and long-term goals.
- Provides guidance on commercial lending options and requirements, including loan structures, collateral considerations, documentation expectations, and timelines.
- Serves as the primary point of contact through the initial qualification and application process, ensuring a high-quality, member-centered experience.
- Coordinates with credit/underwriting to package loan requests, summarize transaction purpose and strengths/risks, and facilitate timely decisioning.
- Helps resolve exceptions and documentation needs by working collaboratively with the borrower and internal partners.
- Gathers, reviews, and organizes required documentation for commercial loan requests (e.g., financial statements, tax returns, borrowing base details, AR/AP aging, business plan/projections when applicable, entity/ownership documentation).
- Assists in preparing complete and accurate credit request packages to support underwriting analysis and loan committee presentation (as applicable).
- Maintains proactive communication with borrowers regarding status updates, conditions, and next steps.
- Supports retention and expansion of existing commercial relationships by identifying opportunities for renewals, additional credit needs, refinancing, and cross-sell solutions.
- Participates in periodic relationship reviews and monitoring activities as directed (e.g., annual reviews, covenant/financial reporting follow-up), ensuring a consistent, professional member experience.
- Escalates emerging risks, member concerns, or service issues promptly to appropriate leadership and credit partners.
- Develop, maintain, and expand relationships with local automobile and equipment dealerships.
- Serve as the primary liaison between dealership partners and the credit union for indirect lending.
- Promote indirect lending programs, pricing, and service standards to dealer partners.
- Ensures all activities comply with credit union policies, information security standards, and applicable regulatory requirements, including fair lending and privacy expectations.
- Maintains a strong working knowledge of commercial lending program guidelines, documentation standards, and internal controls.
- Protect member confidentiality and handles sensitive financial information with discretion and professionalism.
- Demonstrates high integrity, sound judgment, and a risk-aware approach aligned with the credit union’s mission and values.

Compliance and Regulatory Awareness
- Understand and adhere to credit union regulatory requirements.
- Participate in periodic compliance and security training as required by the credit union.
- Adhere to organizational policies and procedures and comply with the requirements of the Bank Secrecy Act
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Marketing, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5+ years of experience in financial services business development, commercial lending, relationship management, or B2B consultative sales (credit union/community bank preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to build referral networks and develop long-term relationships with business owners and community partners.
- Working knowledge of commercial lending products and fundamentals (e.g., loan structures, collateral basics, financial statement review concepts).
- Strong organizational and follow-up skills; ability to manage multiple opportunities and deadlines with attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word).
- Excellent communication and presentation skills; professional presence and ability to influence.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally for business development activities.
- Experience with Member Business Lending (MBL), including commercial real estate and/or C&I lending.
- Familiarity with business financial analysis concepts (cash flow, DSCR, leverage, global cash flow, guarantor analysis).
- Established network within the local business community and referral partner base.
- Knowledge of small business solutions (treasury/cash management services, merchant services, business deposit products).
Work Environment & Requirements
- Office/branch environment with frequent computer, phone, and in-person interaction.
- Requires regular travel to meet with potential and existing members, dealers, realtors, and travel to various networking events. Reliable transportation required.
- Ability to sit/stand for extended periods, use standard office equipment, and travel locally for meetings and events.
- Occasional evening/weekend availability for community and business events.
- A consistent, professional, and positive image within the workplace. Effectively and professionally represent the Credit Union in the community.
