Job Summary
The Cytotechnologist prepares and processes specimens for cytological evaluation. Performs microscopic interpretationand evaluation of slides prepared from Gynecologic and Non-gynecologic specimens. Screens for malignant cells andbenign cellular changes and maintains required level of quality control. Isolates and marks significant findings for reviewby pathologist. Responsible for documenting total number of slides examined and number of hours examining slides pereach 24 hour period.
Responsibilities
Screens and Evaluates Cytology Slides
Takes patient's clinical history into consideration when interpreting slides. Screens slides in a timely manner, accurately evaluates slides (as determined by pathologist) forquality of collection, hormonal effect, inflammation, benign atypias, dysplasias and neoplasms. Agrees with pathologist on cytological interpretation 98% of the time. Has less than three documented events related to screening, evaluating, and interpreting. Processes specimens in accordance with prescribed procedures. No more than 3 errors per yearconcerning quality of smears. Makes medical correlation of test results, demonstrating professional application of the principles andtheories of medical technology. Verifies procedures and ensures the reasonableness of the test results,includes information regarding abnormal appearance of the specimen whenever necessary. Recognizes and reacts to critical values by calling the results and documents on the report whenresults are called, the time of the call and the name of the individual receiving the report. Receives specimens for cytological analysis, evaluates their suitability for processing and labels withcorrect accession number according to established policies and procedures. Has no more than one documented instance related to specimen accession numbering. Investigatesproblems associated with specimen or paperwork; informs pathologist when necessary. Highlights abnormal or positive areas on slide before referring to pathologist according to establishedpolicies and procedures. Not more than 3 instances per year of inaccurate highlights.
Assists Pathologist
Completes work a timely manner; meets deadlines. Assists in accessioning and processing all tissue and cytology specimens. Performs variety of duties, special projects as requested by pathologist/supervisor.
QA & QC
Completes QA records on a daily basis at least 95% of the time. Performs, documents and evaluates QA records according to established policies and procedures.This includes meeting the regulations of outside agencies. Performs, documents and evaluates QC procedures and maintains records according to establishedpolicies and procedures. Performs QC per policy and procedures. Has less than three documented events related to QC procedures.
Laboratory Computer Systems
Performs all phases of specimen log in, documentation and collation of test results in computersystem with 98-99% accuracy. Acts as resource for training on Cytology computer related matters. Acts as a reference for cytology computer problems or questions.
Performs Other Duties as Required
Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Completes all required competency assessments on time. Maintains required job knowledge (e.g. licensure and credentials, continuing education etc.). Maintains policies and procedures for cytology. Maintains quality level expected for CAP inspections. Oversees ordering needed for cytology and ng cytology tasks. Performs Other Duties as Required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Light Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to10 lbs with a maximum lifting of 25 lbs.
Two years experience Cytology lab preferred.
