Full Job Description

Teaching Artist / Facilitator – Cosmetology & Visual Arts Educator

House of Futures is a nonprofit arts and wellness program focused on empowering youth through creativity, emotional expression, and real-world skills.

Our programming combines creative education, mentorship, and skill-building to help students build confidence, develop new abilities, express themselves creatively, and experience a positive, supportive learning environment.

We are seeking passionate, reliable Teaching Artists/Facilitators to lead hands-on workshops in cosmetology and/or visual arts throughout Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens.

This role is about more than teaching technical skills. Successful Teaching Artists understand that youth engagement is built through trust, consistency, encouragement, and relationship-building. Students are more likely to participate and grow when they feel supported, respected, and connected.

We are looking for educators and facilitators who value youth-centered learning, community-building, professionalism, and creating meaningful experiences for students.

Responsibilities

Facilitate small-group workshops in cosmetology and/or visual arts.
Build positive relationships with students and create a welcoming classroom environment.
Encourage student participation, confidence, and creative expression.
Teach hands-on skills while adapting to different student learning styles.
Follow lesson plans, program expectations, and safety procedures.
Arrive prepared, on time, and ready to engage with students.
Support classroom setup, cleanup, and end-of-day program responsibilities.
Communicate professionally with students, families, staff, and program leadership.
Accept feedback and implement guidance consistently.
Complete required program documentation and updates.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who are:

Reliable and punctual.
Professional and dependable.
Comfortable working with youth and young adults.
Strong communicators.
Able to build relationships and create a positive learning environment.
Comfortable following program structure, expectations, and feedback.

Experience working with youth, young adults, schools, or community-based programs is strongly preferred.

Experience or skills in one or more of the following areas:

Cosmetology:

Hair styling
Braiding
Makeup
Nails
Waxing
Barbering

Visual Arts:

Painting
Drawing
Photography
Dance
Mixed media
Creative arts education

Candidates do not need to have every listed skill. However, candidates who do not currently have experience in a specific area must be willing to learn, receive feedback, and continue developing their skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Cosmetology license or professional beauty background.
Arts education experience.
Experience with social-emotional learning (SEL).
Experience mentoring, coaching, or supporting youth development.
