Job Description: Spay/Neuter Clinic Surgery Manager
Position
The Surgery Manager is responsible for overseeing all surgical operations within our high‑volume spay/neuter clinic in Warren. This role combines hands‑on clinical support with operational leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality surgical services. The Surgery Manager supervises surgical staff, maintains medical protocols, and ensures optimal patient care from intake through recovery.
This position plays a critical role in advancing the organization’s mission by increasing access to affordable spay/neuter services and improving animal welfare outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Operations & Patient Care
· Oversee daily surgical workflow, ensuring efficient case flow from intake through discharge
· Support veterinarians and surgical teams during procedures as needed (including anesthesia monitoring, patient prep, and recovery)
· Ensure adherence to best practices for pre‑operative, intra‑operative, and post‑operative care
· Monitor patient safety, anesthesia protocols, and recovery outcomes
· Maintain high‑volume surgery targets while prioritizing quality care and humane handling
Staff Leadership & Development
· Supervise, train, and mentor veterinary technicians, assistants, and surgical support staff
· Manage staffing schedules and assign roles to ensure smooth surgical flow
· Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development
· Foster a positive, collaborative, and mission-driven team culture
Clinic Operations & Efficiency
· Manage day-to-day surgical clinic operations, including workflow optimization and productivity
· Coordinate scheduling of surgeries, staff, and clinic resources
· Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and surgical protocols
· Continuously evaluate processes and implement improvements to increase efficiency and outcomes
Inventory, Equipment & Facilities
· Maintain inventory of surgical supplies, medications, and anesthesia equipment
· Ensure proper maintenance and functioning of surgical equipment
· Oversee cleanliness, sterilization, and infection control standards
· Coordinate equipment repairs and preventative maintenance
Compliance & Safety
· Ensure compliance with veterinary medical guidelines, OSHA, DEA, and applicable regulatory standards
· Maintain accurate medical records, drug logs, and surgical documentation
· Conduct quality control checks and safety audits
· Promote safe animal handling practices and staff safety
Administrative & Financial Oversight
· Assist in managing clinic budget, supply costs, and operational expenses
· Track key metrics such as surgery volume, complication rates, and efficiency
· Collaborate with leadership on reporting and performance improvement initiatives
Client & Community Engagement
· Ensure excellent client service and communicate professionally with pet owners
· Handle client concerns and support education on spay/neuter importance
· Support outreach events and community programs when applicable
Required Qualifications
· 5+ years of experience in veterinary or animal welfare settings
· 3+ years of supervisory or management experience
· Experience in training and mentoring employees
· Proficiency in anesthesia prep, monitoring and surgical patient recovery care
· Experience with veterinary practice management systems and recordkeeping
· Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
· Licensed/Registered Veterinary Technician (LVT/RVT/CVT)
· HQHVSN (High-Quality, High-Volume Spay/Neuter) experience
· Experience developing SOPs and managing clinic workflows
· Nonprofit or shelter medicine experience
Working Conditions
· Fast-paced, high-volume surgical environment
· Regular exposure to animals, medical equipment, and anesthesia gases
· Ability to lift and handle animals safely and work on feet for extended periods
· May include weekends, early mornings, or outreach/mobile clinic events
Work shift 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, early morning to late afternoon.
