Job Title: Archives Student Worker
Effective Date: 07/16/2026
Reports to: College Archivist & Special Collections Librarian
Department: Library
Rate of Pay: Maryland Minimum Wage
FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
Location of Position: Hoover Library, McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157
Duration of Appointment: August 5, 2026 to May 25, 2026
Schedule: Schedule is at discretion of supervisor
Evaluation Procedures: Student workers are evaluated on a continuous basis.
Scope: Assist College Archivist & Special Collections Librarian with processing, preservation, digitalization, and display of archival materials.
Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the College Archivist, process archival collections, arrange materials, and create finding aids
- Operate Zeutschel overhead book scanner to digitize various archival materials
- Assist in assembling archival exhibits, including creating exhibit labels and handling and display of materials
- Help with archive events, activities, and tours as needed
- Complete other duties as assigned by the College Archivist & Special Collections Librarian
Schedule
- 4-10 hours per week, Monday-Friday, must have availability between 8:30AM-3:30PM.
Qualifications
- Current sophomore, junior, or senior student at McDaniel (a few exceptions may be made for first-year students)
- Able to engage in a repetitive task requiring extensive use of hands (e.g. cutting, folding, and other miscellaneous tasks requiring dexterity)
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Able to closely follow multi-step workflows
- Comfortable learning new software applications
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Comfortable working around dust and dirt
- Discretion and reliability in handling sensitive and confidential information (see information security role below)
Preferred Qualifications
- History/Art History, Art, or English Major or Minor
- Strong interest in archives, museum studies, or other cultural heritage institutions
- Familiarity with proper handling/storage of historic materials
- Demonstrated experience in historical research
- Familiarity or interest in photography
Physical Characteristics
- This position requires sitting or standing for long periods of time, as well as some bending and stooping.
- This position does have some limited lifting involved but not more than 15-25 pounds at a time.
- Quite a bit of finger/hand dexterity and steadiness is involved handling archival materials. The ability to use a keyboard and mouse is required. The overall setting of the job is in an area conducive to a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.
Information Security Role: Data User
- Follow the policies and procedures established by the appropriate Data Stewards.
- Comply with federal and state laws and regulations as well as College policies, procedures, and standards associated with the College computing resources and institutional data used.
- Use institutional data only as required for the conduct of College business within the scope of employment.
- Implement safeguards prescribed by appropriate Data Stewards for Limited Access and Restricted Data.
- Ensure the appropriateness, accuracy, and timeliness of institutional data used for the conduct of College business.
- Report any unauthorized access, data misuse, or data quality issues to the appropriate Data Steward for remediation.
- Accept and complete the confidentiality statement yearly if access includes Restricted data.
- Report any suspected data breach to the CIO and the IT Help Desk as soon as possible.
