Full Job Description

Position Overview:

The Lead HVAC Installation Technician will serve as the premier field professional for the Chicago and Cook County expansion of Temperature Doctors Heating & Cooling, Inc. This critical role executes high-efficiency residential and commercial mechanical system installations, with a specialized operational focus on advanced heat pump systems, decarbonization retrofits, and complex ductwork modifications.

As the foundational first hire for this market expansion, the successful candidate will bridge the gap between high-level project scoping and field execution. Beyond superior technical performance, this position mandates a heavy emphasis on workforce development, peer mentorship, and strict regulatory code compliance.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

TECHNICAL INSTALLATION & FIELD EXECUTION

Lead the physical installation of residential and commercial HVAC equipment, including air-source heat pumps, dual-fuel configurations, mini-splits, traditional furnaces, and central air arrays.
Perform premium structural modifications to air distribution subsystems, including reshaping deformed metal ducts, installing collars, and executing high-level plenum sealing using fiber-reinforced mastic and UL-listed parameters.
Execute layout, mechanical line running, brazing, evacuation, charging, and electrical wiring configurations in strict compliance with the Chicago Building and Mechanical Codes.
Verify proper system operation and static pressure parameters upon completion to guarantee optimal system coefficient of performance (COP) and client comfort.

WORKFORCE MENTORSHIP & TEAM DEVELOPMENT

Act as the primary field mentor and on-site supervisor for junior technicians, helper installers, and local resident apprentices.
Conduct daily tool-box safety checks, blueprint alignment walkthroughs, and step-by-step practical training blocks for supporting field crew members.
Foster a culture of professional growth, evaluating the technical skill development of junior team members and providing direct, constructive performance feedback.

COMPLIANCE, INTEGRITY & QUALITY CONTROL

Maintain accurate project daily logs, timekeeping parameters, and equipment serialization tracking protocols.
Ensure absolute alignment with program-specific Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for municipal energy efficiency or utility-backed decarbonization initiatives.
Operate with total transparency and integrity, executing lead-safe painting/disturbing practices when handling vintage property envelopes.

Candidate Qualifications & Skill Standards:

REQUIRED TECHNICAL ATTRIBUTES

Experience Lookback: 5+ years of continuous, verifiable field installation experience handling multi-ton residential and light commercial system swap-outs and retrofits.
Regulatory Status: Active EPA Universal Certification (Section 608). Valid Illinois Driver's License with a completely clean driving history.
Mechanical Competency: Advanced reading capacity for structural blueprints, piping diagrams, line-voltage/low-voltage electrical schematics, and Xactimate project scopes.

REQUIRED SOFT SKILLS & BEHAVIORAL MARKERS

High Organizational Posture: Ability to manage truck inventory, pipeline materials sheets, and installation tracking data with zero oversight.
Detail Orientation: Uncompromising pride in line set straightness, structural hanging configurations, electrical neatness, and zero-leak duct parameters.
Personable Communication: Exceptional verbal skills when clarifying complex technical details or operational timelines with private homeowners, commercial managers, and program auditors.
Strict Integrity Standard: A clear track record of working honestly, protecting company property, respecting client households, and keeping the job site safe and immaculate.
