Job Summary
The K-12 Physical Education Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that promotes physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and lifelong wellness. This position develops and delivers standards-aligned instruction that enhances students' physical, social, and emotional development while fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility. The K-12 Physical Education Teacher collaborates with students, families, and school staff to support student achievement and encourage lifelong participation in physical activity.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
- Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned Physical Education instruction for students in grades K-12 that promotes physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and lifelong wellness.
- Develop and implement age-appropriate lessons that enhance motor skills, physical fitness, movement concepts, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning, developmental, and physical needs of all students.
- Assess student performance through a variety of methods, including skill demonstrations, fitness assessments, participation, and written evaluations as appropriate.
- Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment that encourages active participation and respect for others.
- Teach proper techniques, rules, and safety procedures for a variety of individual and team sports, games, and physical activities.
- Promote healthy decision-making and lifelong fitness habits through physical education instruction.
- Maintain and inspect physical education equipment and facilities to ensure a safe instructional environment.
- Supervise students during physical education classes and other assigned activities while enforcing school policies and safety procedures.
- Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum, support school initiatives, and participate in ongoing professional development.
- Participate in school activities, meetings, and events to contribute to the overall mission of the institution.
- Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and school staff.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
Cognitive Demands:
- Supervision of multiple students during indoor and outdoor physical activities.
- Establishing routines and procedures that promote safety and active participation.
- Maintaining a safe, organized, and positive learning environment.
- Creating and implementing engaging instructional plans for students across multiple grade levels.
- Assessing student progress and adapting instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Participating in continuous professional development.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
Physical Demands:
- Frequently stand, walk, run, bend, kneel, squat, and demonstrate physical activities throughout the school day.
- Occasionally lift, carry, or move equipment and objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Frequently set up, move, and store physical education equipment.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the school year.
- Withstand moderate to high noise levels in gymnasiums and outdoor activity areas.
- Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.
- Assist/lift students, as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Physical Education (MB) endorsement.
- Strong knowledge of physical education curriculum, instructional best practices, and student assessment.
- Ability to develop engaging lessons that promote physical fitness, wellness, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.
- Excellent classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in planning and assessing educational activities.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain if required.
