Southland College Prep Charter High School is seeking a dedicated, energetic, and highly organized Dance Instructional Assistant to support the school's Dance Teacher in delivering a high-quality dance education program. The successful candidate will work closely with the Dance Teacher to assist with classroom instruction, rehearsals, performances, and other dance-related activities. The Dance Instructional Assistant must demonstrate professionalism, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to fostering student growth both artistically and academically.
Experience
- Prior experience working with children or youth programs in arts education or related fields
- Demonstrated ability to teach or assist with dance instruction, choreography, or movement classes
- Knowledge of curriculum development tailored for early childhood education or preschool settings
- Experience working with special education needs or behavior management techniques is a plus
- Familiarity with classroom management strategies and childhood development principles
- Skills in teaching visual & performing arts such as theater or music are highly desirable
- Background in ballet or other dance forms; experience with musical instruments or theatrical performance is beneficial
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate daily with the Dance Teacher to support classroom instruction, rehearsals, and performance preparation.
- Assist in preparing instructional materials, lesson resources, choreography notes, and study aids for classroom and after-school practices.
- Learn and demonstrate a variety of dance styles and techniques in order to reinforce instruction and provide guidance to students.
- Provide individual and small-group instruction to reinforce dance techniques, choreography, and classroom learning as directed by the Dance Teacher.
- Assist in implementing instructional activities by encouraging student participation and reinforcing learning objectives.
- Support students in developing proper dance technique, performance skills, discipline, and confidence.
- Monitor student progress and maintain records related to skill development under the direction of the Dance Teacher.
- Assist with organizing rehearsals, performances, competitions, community events, and other extracurricular activities.
- Maintain accurate records, files, logs, and other documentation as assigned.
- Ensure a safe, organized, and positive learning environment during instructional and extracurricular activities.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, faculty, and administration.
- Participate in school events, performances, community outreach, and interscholastic activities as required.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Dance Teacher, administration, or CEO that are consistent with the responsibilities of Southland College Prep Charter High School faculty and staff.
- Assist lead dance instructors in planning and executing curriculum that incorporates various dance styles, choreography, and performance techniques
- Support classroom management by maintaining a safe, inclusive, and energetic environment for students of all ages
- Help students develop technical skills in ballet, modern dance, or other styles through one-on-one guidance and group activities
- Prepare teaching materials, musical accompaniments, and visual aids to enhance lessons
- Engage students in activities that integrate performing arts with other creative disciplines such as theater, music, photography, or sewing
- Support behavior management strategies to ensure positive classroom interactions and respect among students
Qualifications
- Valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Professional Educator License (PEL) or Career and Technical Educator License required.
- Advanced proficiency in multiple dance disciplines, including but not limited to:
- Ballet
- Jazz
- Tap
- Modern
- Lyrical
- Folk/World Dance
- Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for teaching dance techniques and mentoring students.
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while taking direction from the Dance Teacher.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the school community.
