Radio Communications Technician
Pay: $15.00-$45.00 per hour
Job Type: Full-time
Location: Wichita, KS
Job Description
Gateway Wireless is looking for a motivated Radio Communications Technician to join our growing technical team.
Previous two-way radio experience is preferred, but not required. We are willing to train the right person from the ground up if they are intelligent, technically inclined, dependable, and good at figuring out how things work.
Starting pay is based on what you already know and how much training you will require. Someone coming in with no technical experience may start toward the bottom of the range, while candidates with experience in two-way radio, RF, electronics, IT, networking, low-voltage, automotive electrical, or similar technical fields may start significantly higher.
This position has a defined path for advancement. Our goal isn't to hire someone at an entry-level wage and leave them there. As your knowledge, independence, and responsibilities increase, your compensation can increase with you, with experienced Lead Technicians earning up to $45/hour.
What You'll Work On
Our technicians work with a wide variety of communications equipment and systems, including:
- Portable and mobile two-way radios
- Analog and digital radio systems
- DMR, P25, NXDN, and Push-to-Talk over Cellular systems
- Repeaters and base stations
- Antennas, coaxial cable, and RF systems
- Radio programming and fleet configuration
- Vehicle and building installations
- Troubleshooting and equipment repair
- RF testing and system performance verification
- Networking and IP-connected communications equipment
As your knowledge grows, you'll have opportunities to work on increasingly advanced troubleshooting, system installations, RF equipment, and larger communications projects.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who likes learning and solving problems.
You should:
- Have strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Be mechanically and technically inclined
- Be comfortable with computers and learning new software
- Have good attention to detail
- Be dependable and show up on time
- Stay productive without needing constant supervision
- Be willing and able to learn new technologies
- Retain training and apply what you've learned
- Take pride in clean, professional work
- Communicate professionally with customers and coworkers
- Be comfortable working independently and as part of a team
Experience with two-way radios, electronics, soldering, multimeters, networking, automotive electronics, low-voltage wiring, RF equipment, or communications systems is a plus, but not required.
Pay and Career Progression
$15-$20/hour: Entry-level trainee requiring significant technical training
$20-$25/hour: Strong technical aptitude and/or related technical experience
$25-$35/hour: Developing to experienced communications technician capable of independently completing common programming, installation, service, and troubleshooting work
$35-$40/hour: Senior technician capable of advanced troubleshooting, system work, and independently handling complex projects
Up to $45/hour: Lead Technician with advanced technical knowledge and the ability to lead projects and other technicians
Placement and advancement are based on demonstrated ability, knowledge, independence, quality of work, and responsibility rather than simply time in the position.
Entry-level technicians will receive formal performance and compensation reviews at approximately 90 days and six months so employees who learn quickly have an opportunity to advance quickly.
Performance and Advancement
Gateway Wireless recognizes technicians who consistently demonstrate strong attendance, reliability, quality workmanship, productivity, technical growth, and the ability to work independently.
Performance-based bonus opportunities may be available in addition to regular hourly compensation.
We believe increased ability should lead to increased opportunity. Technicians who demonstrate rapid technical growth and increasing independence will have opportunities for compensation advancement based on their demonstrated capabilities.
Who Should Apply?
You do not need to already be a radio technician.
If you're the person people come to when something isn't working because you're good at figuring things out, we want to hear from you.
We're especially interested in people with backgrounds in:
- Two-way radio or communications
- Electronics repair
- IT and computer networking
- Low-voltage systems
- Automotive electrical and accessory installation
