Full Job Description

Overview
Director of Development & Community Philanthropy leads Avalon's fundraising and donor engagement strategy to strengthen long-term community investment in the organization's mission. This full-time leadership role is responsible for cultivating and stewarding donor relationships, overseeing the annual fund and special campaigns, and increasing Avalon's visibility across the service area. The Director works in close partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to build sustainable philanthropic support and expand community-based giving.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Additional duties may be designated by Executive Director) 40% Strategic Fundraising & Revenue Growth Leadership

● Develops and executes a multi-year, data-informed fundraising strategy aligned with Avalon's strategic plan and revenue targets.

● Establishes annual revenue goals across major gifts, annual funds, special campaigns, and emerging initiatives.

● Leads the annual fund drive with defined benchmarks for acquisition, retention, and average gift growth.

● Builds and manages a major gift portfolio with clear cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans.

● Identifies and launches structured legacy giving opportunities, such as a bequest or planned giving fund, with defined donor pipeline goals.

● Develops the Annual Report.

● Supports the website and social media platforms.

● Partners with the Executive Director and Board to develop a high-capacity prospect strategy and long-term philanthropic partnerships.

● Supports feasibility analysis and planning for future capital campaigns as appropriate.

Performance Focus: Revenue growth, donor retention rate, average gift increase, and donor portfolio pipeline and cultivation.

30% Donor Relations & Stewardship Strategy

● Designs and implements tiered donor engagement strategies based on giving level and capacity. ● Cultivates relationships with individual, corporate, employee resource groups, and community donors.

● Develops structured stewardship plans that increase donor lifetime value and engagement. ● Ensures acknowledgment and follow-up processes occur within defined service standards. ● Creates personalized communication strategies for major and mid-level donors. ● Strengthens systems that improve donor retention and re-engagement of lapsed donors.

Performance Focus: Donor retention rate, major gift growth, and increase in recurring or upgraded gifts.

10% Communications & Visibility for Philanthropic Growth

● Oversees fundraising-related communications across traditional, digital, and social media platforms.

● Ensures consistent, mission-aligned messaging that connects community impact to giving opportunities.

● Collaborates with digital and volunteer engagement staff to align outreach with development goals.

● Represents Avalon at community events, civic meetings, and philanthropic gatherings. ● Conducts targeted presentations that convert community awareness into philanthropic investment.

● Conducts media outreach, including interviews, public service announcements, and community presentations.

● Ensures messaging reflects trauma-informed and survivor-centered principles.

Performance Focus: Conversion rates from outreach to giving, campaign engagement metrics, and donor acquisition growth.

10% Data, Analytics & Systems Oversight

● Oversees the integrity and strategic use of the donor database (CRM).

● Implements data tracking systems that monitor donor lifecycle stages and campaign performance. ● Utilizes donor analytics to inform segmentation, targeting, and stewardship strategies.

● Produces monthly and quarterly development dashboards for the Executive Director and Board. ● Establishes clear KPIs including revenue targets, pipeline development, and retention benchmarks.

Performance Focus: Data accuracy, reporting timeliness, measurable return on campaign investment, and pipeline growth.

10% Community Philanthropy & Leadership

● Represents Avalon's mission across both urban and rural communities within the service area. ● Builds long-term relationships with business leaders, civic organizations, faith communities, and philanthropic partners.

● Supports and mentors staff and volunteers participating in development initiatives. ● Fosters a culture of philanthropy across the organization by integrating fundraising awareness into leadership and program conversations.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

● Bachelor's degree.

● Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in fundraising, donor relations, or nonprofit development leadership.

● Demonstrated success managing annual funds and major gift portfolios with measurable results. ● Experience partnering with nonprofit boards in revenue strategy and donor cultivation. ● Proficiency with donor database and CRM systems and performance reporting. ● Strong strategic planning and independent execution skills.

● Professional presence with excellent written, verbal, and public communication skills. ● Ability to interpret and leverage data to drive revenue decisions.

● Successful completion of required background screening.

● Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and reliable transportation.

PREPARATION

● Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence services, preferred

● CFRE credential or equivalent professional certification (preferred)

● Major gift and planned giving experience.

● Experience with marketing, communications, and brand management.

● Established relationships within the agency's service region.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
