Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Director of Human Resources is a strategic leader and trusted advisor to the Executive Director and Leadership Team. As the organization’s sole HR professional, the Director balances long-term strategic planning with day-to-day operational execution. The Director serves as a member of the Leadership Team and plays a key role in advancing organizational effectiveness and culture, translating the organization’s mission into people practices that attract, develop, and retain a talented, mission-driven workforce. This position implements all human resource functions, including organizational development, employee and labor relations, talent acquisition, compensation, benefits, HR compliance, risk management, safety, leave administration, performance management, HR technology, and workforce planning while maintaining compliance with employment law and nonprofit best practices. As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Human Resources champions a workplace culture where staff feel valued, supported, and connected to the impact of their work. This full-time position offers a hybrid work schedule.

Essential Functions

Provides leadership and direction for the Human Resources function.

Partners with executive leadership, managers, and the Board HR Committee.

Manages external relationships with benefit brokers, insurance carriers, legal counsel, HRIS providers, retirement vendors, and government agencies.

Develop and administer HR policies, procedures, and compliance programs.

Lead employee and labor relations, workplace investigations, accommodations, and Collective Bargaining Agreement administration.

Coach and advise supervisors on employee performance, conflict resolution, communication, and effective people management.

Exercise sound judgment and maintain the highest level of confidentiality.

Direct and implement full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, retention initiatives, and succession planning.

Design and administer performance management and employee development initiatives.

Lead compensation strategy, salary benchmarking, and market analyses.

Develop benefits strategy, oversee annual renewal process, negotiate with brokers and carriers, evaluate plan performance, recommend plan design changes, and administer Open Enrollment.

Administer benefit plans, COBRA, retirement plans, leave programs, and HRIS.

Partner with Finance to ensure accurate payroll processing, benefit administration, retirement reporting, leave reconciliation, and HR-related financial compliance.

Oversee workers' compensation, unemployment claims, organizational safety initiatives, and business continuity planning.

Support grant, regulatory, and EEOC reporting requirements and audits.

Recommend and facilitate employee training courses at large and assign staff trainings as needed.

Prepare reports and recommendations for executive leadership and the Board as needed.

Expert knowledge of employment law, employee relations, compensation, benefits, labor relations, and HR operations.

Strong emotional intelligence, analytical, communication, leadership and interpersonal skills.

Excellent project management and organizational skills.

Demonstrated ability to build trust across all levels of an organization, ability to maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.

Experience managing competing priorities and leading organizational change.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.

Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible HR experience, including senior leadership experience.

Demonstrated experience with benefits renewals, broker negotiations, compensation, HR compliance, labor relations, and HRIS administration.

Preferred Qualifications

SHRM-SCP or SPHR certification.

Experience in supporting non-profit mission-driven organizations.

Experience with H-1B sponsorship coordination and collaboration with employment counsel.

Experience with unionized workforces.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform work in an office environment, operate standard office equipment, and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
