JOB The City of Wilmington, Ohio is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic/EMT with the Wilmington Fire Department. Firefighters respond to emergency situations where life, property, or the environment may be at risk. Duties include fire suppression, rescue operations, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, and disaster assistance. Firefighters also participate in fire prevention, public education, equipment maintenance, and station operations.

- Performs fire prevention, suppression, and rescue activities; responds to fire alarms and emergency calls; makes openings in burning buildings for ventilation and entry; lays and connects hose lines; operates nozzles directing water streams; operates portable fire extinguishers, axes, claw tools, and other firefighting equipment; performs salvage operations at fire scenes such as covering furniture, mopping floors, and clearing debris.

Drives and operates fire apparatus including pump trucks, ladder trucks, aerial equipment, and support vehicles; raises and climbs ladders; prevents the spread of fire and protects property from water damage; tests fire hydrants for flow, pressure, condition, accessibility, and location.

May assume command of a fire or emergency scene in the absence of an officer by evaluating the situation, determining appropriate methods and procedures, and coordinating activities of firefighters and assisting agencies on scene.

Performs emergency medical services and rescue functions; responds to medical calls; operates ambulances and provides emergency medical care to injured or ill individuals; administers oxygen, CPR, medications, and other treatments consistent with certification levels and Ohio EMS protocols.

Utilizes medical equipment including blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, IV equipment, cardiac monitoring equipment, backboards, and defibrillators; monitors and interprets EKGs; maintains radio communication with hospitals and dispatch.

Ensures equipment is fully operational at all times; performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment, and fire stations; conducts and documents required equipment inspections; participates in preventative maintenance on fire apparatus and station facilities.

Responds to service calls including smoke detector activations, carbon monoxide alarms, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency service requests.

Participates in pre-fire planning, fire prevention inspections, community education programs, and fire safety outreach.

Salary Information
Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, entry-level annual compensation for 2026 begins at:

$70,684.12 – Firefighter (entry-level)

$73,927.93 – Firefighter/Paramedic
Starting salary is based on certifications. Employees are also eligible for holiday pay and overtime in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Lateral transfers from full-time combination Fire/EMS departments are accepted. Placement on the wage scale is based on verified years of full-time service, with a current maximum base salary of $84,678.83 (Paramedic rate).
