Role Summary:
The Maintenance Technician/ Farm Equipment Operator at Mainstay Farming Partnership in Kewanna, Indiana is a hands-on, multi-skilled role responsible for keeping farm operations running smoothly and efficiently. This position focuses on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of agricultural equipment while also operating machinery during key production seasons such as planting and harvest.
A core part of the role includes preventive maintenance, parts ordering and stocking, and shop scheduling for efficient workflow. In addition, the technician will be responsible for organizing tools and parts, tracking inventory, and maintaining adequate stock levels to minimize downtime.
The ideal candidate is mechanically skilled, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced agricultural environment where reliability, problem-solving, and seasonal flexibility are essential to supporting successful crop production.
Key Responsibilities:Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair agricultural machinery and farm equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance on tractors, combines, planters, sprayers, tillage equipment, grain handling equipment, and support vehicles.
- Maintain detailed service records and maintenance schedules for all equipment.
- Minimize equipment downtime during planting, spraying, harvest, and other critical operational periods.
- Coordinate with equipment dealers and parts suppliers when necessary.
Farm Operations
- Operate farm equipment during peak seasons.
- Assist with grain management, transportation, and general farm duties.
- Support efficient daily operations while maintaining a high standard of work quality and safety.
Shop & Inventory Management
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient farm shop.
- Track inventory levels for tools, lubricants, filters, repair parts, and shop supplies.
- Order and restock parts and supplies to ensure operational readiness.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and organize parts storage systems.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety procedures and equipment operating standards.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
- Assist in identifying and implementing operational improvements and preventative maintenance practices.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience repairing and maintaining agricultural equipment.
- Experience operating farm machinery and agricultural equipment safely and efficiently.
- Familiarity with John Deere equipment and GPS/precision agriculture systems.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to work seasonal hours as needed.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical training in diesel mechanics, agricultural equipment technology, or related fields preferred.
Preferred Qualifications ("Good to Have"):
- Strong mechanical skills and hands-on problem-solving ability.
- Ability to produce quality results in a consistent and timely manner and to work against deadlines.
- Previous experience in agricultural maintenance, diesel mechanics, or farm operations.
- Knowledge of grain farming operations and modern production agriculture practices.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
- Ability to work long hours during peak planting and harvest seasons.
- Comfortable working around heavy machinery, agricultural chemicals, dust, noise, and outdoor environments.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
