SPECIAL EDUCATION – PARAPROFESSIONAL
Special education aides work under the overall supervision of the SPED Director with direct supervision provided by special education teachers. They are employed when required to implement special education or related services for a class and/or to provide direct assistance to students. Their duties will vary depending upon the age of students served as well as the nature and severity of the student’s disabilities.
Essential Functions
- Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of the facilitator and classroom teachers.
- Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans for the students and monitor their progress.
- Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
- Work with other professionals, such as speech therapist, social worker, occupational and physical therapists.
- Assist classroom teachers with maintaining student records.
- Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.
- Assist in the preparation and display of student work.
- Assist classroom teachers with copying items to support teaching.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the work unit as required.

ATTENDANCE is a priority and must be exceptional. Must do what is required to prepare for the day. Sometimes longer days are necessary and you will be notified when that is required.
Para’s generally work from Monday through Friday, with their weekly work schedule generally lasting for not more than thirty five to forty hours. Must be able to adhere to the attendance schedule assigned by their supervisor.
INTERACTION with administration and other employee’s may require you to deal with students who are upset and work with management to resolve issues with students in a professional and helpful manner when required. Communicate with administration, staff and employees, in a manner that is accurate, in a courteous, tactful and diplomatic manner.
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records; assisting in maintaining order in the classrooms and assisting teachers.
KNOWLEDGE is required of district policy, procedures, local, federal and state laws applicable to functions related to the field of special education para-professionals; keeping up with changes in state and federal laws related to special education para-professionals. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: English grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary; and office practices.
FLEXIBILITY is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; coordinating others; representing the school in a professional, friendly and helpful manner. Working with others within the organization (teachers, administration, etc.) to accomplish defined goals in a timely manner is required.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting 30% walking, and 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. Limit access to the reception area to those who are required to be in the area.
The employee frequently must lift squat, stoop or kneel, reach about the head and reach forward. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
Be capable of physically assisting students with specials needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.)
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 100 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
