Full Job Description

Department: Law Enforcement Center – Jail Division

Responsible To: Jail Administrator / Assistant Administrator / Medical Supervisor

Primary Objective of Position

Under the direct supervision of the Jail Administrator, Assistant Administrator and Medical Supervisor, responsible for assisting with the efficient operation of the Jail. The nursing assistant, under direct supervision from administration and medical staff will assist inmates with direct health care needs while working with the interdisciplinary team, within scope of practice. Performance in the position as a Nursing Assistant is reviewed and evaluated by the Medical Supervisor and Administration by observations, inspections and discussions.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

Contributes to the assessment of the health status of inmates by collecting basic objective and subjective data, identified by the licensed nurse, from observations and interviews.

Identifies basic signs and symptoms of deviations from normal health status and provides basic information which licensed nurses use in the identification of problems and needs.

Contributes to the development of the plan of care for individuals by reporting basic data.

Contributes to the evaluation by documenting and communicating patient responses and assists with collecting data.

Prepares work areas and equipment to facilitate the licensed nurse/provider in performing care.

Performs general clerical and office support duties to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the service.

Picks up medications from pharmacy for inmates and other medical supplies as directed.

Documents accurately, thoroughly, and legibly

Promotes and assists others to practice safe work habits; identifies and reports health and safety hazards; offers suggestions and participates in corrective action.

Administers prescribed routine medications to inmates as assigned by professional nursing staff.

Verifies identity of inmate receiving medication and records name of drug, dosage, and time of administration on specified forms and records.

Follows written or verbal instructions on how to manage medications.

Presents medication to inmate and observes ingestion, or administers medication as prescribed, within scope.

Documents reasons why prescribed medications are not documented and notifies nursing staff.

Stocks and prepares medications, as directed by physician and nursing staff

Assists with physical examinations; collects and records physical information such as height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, and similar vital signs. Completes pain scale with inmate and collects specimens as required.

Consults with nursing staff and Nursing Supervisor for current medication and physical status of inmates.

Performs other duties as assigned

Will learn aspects of correctional officer’s duties through cross training

Inclement Weather:

When Inclement weather is predicted it will be the responsibility of the employee scheduled for work to make arrangements to be inside city limits.

The Public Works Department or Police Department may be able to pick up employees for work within the city limits based on need.

It is expected that the employee notifies their supervisor of any changes as soon as possible.

It is the responsibility of the employee to make their own arrangements to cover scheduled shifts if they are not able to make it to work.

Knowledge/Qualifications Required by the Position:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must possess a valid driver’s license.

No prior felony criminal record.

No commission of a felony in the previous five years, including felonious drug use or possession

Currently possess an active CNA license in the state of South Dakota along with an active Medication Aide license. If not in the state of South Dakota, must have reciprocity with South Dakota.

Must possess an active CPR certification. Additional first aide training, emergency response, etc. are preferred.

Ability to demonstrate good communication skills.

Ability to maintain a professional relationship with the inmates, general public and other employees.

Ability to function effectively under stressful conditions.

Typing and or computer skills preferred.

Be able to read, write, and basic math.

Ability to obtain Basic Corrections Officers training/certification when offered or classes available

Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of the principles, policies, codes, laws and statutes relating to law enforcement, corrections and necessary operations.

Ability to pass background and drug check.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit, for extended periods of time, and to walk up and down stairs.

The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must regularly be able to lift and or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 150 pounds, with assistance.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places.

The noise level is usually quiet but can be loud at times.

Will work in direct contact with prisoners.

Salary and Benefits

Base salary refer to starting wage policy; the position has benefits as listed in the employee manual which include State of South Dakota retirement, vacation, health insurance and sick leave.
