Allied Land Surveying is seeking an experienced Land Survey Crew Chief capable of independently completing field assignments using modern GNSS/GPS surveying equipment.
This position is designed for a dependable, higher-level crew chief who can receive an assignment, plan and perform the fieldwork, recognize potential problems, document the work thoroughly, and return accurate, organized data to the office with minimal supervision.
Most assignments will be completed as a one-person GNSS crew. A field technician and conventional robotic equipment will be available when project conditions, safety, vegetation, precision requirements, or workload justify additional support.
This is not an entry-level position. The successful candidate must understand that independent operation involves more than collecting points—it requires sound field judgment, careful documentation, proper checking procedures, and communication with the office and supervising Professional Land Surveyor.
Primary Responsibilities
- Independently perform boundary, topographic, existing-conditions, subdivision, as-built and construction-staking fieldwork.
- Operate GNSS/RTK/VRS equipment, data collectors and related surveying technology.
- Establish and verify project control using appropriate checks and redundant observations.
- Search for, identify and document property monuments and other relevant boundary evidence.
- Recognize discrepancies between field evidence, deeds, plats and project information.
- Maintain complete field notes, photographs, sketches, point descriptions and electronic records.
- Review available project information before beginning fieldwork.
- Communicate boundary conflicts, missing information, access problems and unusual field conditions promptly.
- Determine when GNSS conditions are inadequate and conventional equipment or additional personnel are needed.
- Perform routine field calculations and construction-staking computations.
- Protect, maintain and organize assigned surveying equipment and company vehicle.
- Download, organize and transfer field data accurately.
- Minimize avoidable return trips and office rework through complete, careful field procedures.
- Direct and train a rotating field technician when one is assigned.
- Follow company safety procedures and exercise good judgment regarding traffic, terrain, weather and other field hazards.
Required Qualifications
- At least three years of land-surveying field experience, including demonstrated experience independently running survey assignments.
- Proficiency with GNSS/RTK surveying equipment and electronic data collectors.
- Working knowledge of boundary surveying, monument recovery, topographic surveys and construction staking.
- Ability to interpret deeds, plats, construction plans and survey-related project information.
- Ability to maintain clear, complete and defensible field records.
- Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently without sacrificing accuracy or documentation.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, vegetation and terrain.
- Ability to carry field equipment and perform the normal physical duties associated with land surveying.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of progressive surveying experience.
- Experience with robotic total stations in addition to GNSS equipment.
- Experience performing residential and commercial boundary surveys in North Carolina.
- Experience with subdivisions, construction layout, topographic surveys and as-built surveys.
- Familiarity with North Carolina surveying practices and local record systems.
- Experience training or supervising field personnel.
- Surveying or geomatics coursework, CST certification, associate degree, or progress toward professional licensure.
A professional surveying license is not required for this position.
Compensation
The expected pay range is $25–$35 per hour, based on verified experience, technical ability, independence and quality of work.
The upper portion of the range is intended for a senior crew chief who can independently manage difficult field assignments, consistently provide accurate and complete data, train less-experienced employees and require minimal office supervision.
