Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Field Systems & Security Architect to design, deploy, secure, and support sophisticated hardware and software systems in customer environments.
This is a highly hands-on technical position combining systems architecture, infrastructure engineering, cybersecurity, networking, hardware deployment, and field engineering.
The successful candidate must be equally comfortable designing a system architecture and traveling to a customer location to physically deploy and configure that system.
This position requires significant international travel. The individual will frequently serve as a senior technical representative of the company while working directly with customers and their IT, infrastructure, networking, and security teams.
Key ResponsibilitiesSystems Architecture
- Design secure, reliable, and scalable system architectures.
- Develop hardware, server, networking, storage, virtualization, and connectivity requirements.
- Design systems that integrate hardware, software, networking, and security components.
- Evaluate customer environments and determine appropriate deployment architectures.
- Identify technical, security, infrastructure, and deployment risks before installation.
- Develop architecture diagrams, network diagrams, deployment plans, and technical documentation.
Hardware & Field Deployment
- Travel to customer locations domestically and internationally to deploy systems.
- Perform or supervise the physical installation of servers, network equipment, appliances, storage systems, and related hardware.
- Rack, cable, connect, configure, test, and troubleshoot equipment as required.
- Conduct pre-deployment technical and site-readiness assessments.
- Verify power, network, connectivity, environmental, and infrastructure requirements before deployment.
- Configure systems for the specific customer environment.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, networking, software, and integration issues in the field.
- Perform final system testing and support customer acceptance of deployed systems.
Networking & Infrastructure
- Configure and troubleshoot TCP/IP networks, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, VLANs, firewalls, and related technologies.
- Configure Linux and Windows-based server environments.
- Work with physical and virtualized infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot complex connectivity and network-performance issues.
- Integrate company systems into existing customer infrastructure.
- Support secure remote connectivity and remote administration.
Cybersecurity
- Incorporate security principles into system architecture and deployment.
- Perform system hardening and secure configuration of deployed infrastructure.
- Configure access controls, authentication, firewalls, VPNs, and other security mechanisms.
- Identify security weaknesses within proposed or existing architectures.
- Apply security best practices to servers, networks, operating systems, and deployed applications.
- Work with internal security personnel to address vulnerabilities and security requirements.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and appropriate operational security when working with sensitive systems and customer environments.
Customer-Facing Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior technical representative during customer deployments.
- Work directly with customer IT, network, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams.
- Translate technical requirements between customers and internal engineering teams.
- Explain system architecture and technical requirements clearly to technical customer personnel.
- Provide technical training and knowledge transfer when appropriate.
- Professionally manage technical issues that arise during customer deployments.
- Maintain clear communication with company leadership regarding deployment status, risks, and technical issues.
Internal Engineering Support
- Work closely with software engineers, security engineers, researchers, product teams, and management.
- Provide feedback from field deployments to engineering and product teams.
- Help establish standardized deployment procedures and technical documentation.
- Develop installation guides, checklists, configuration standards, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Assist junior engineers and field personnel with complex technical issues.
- Participate in technical planning for future customer deployments.
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 7+ years of experience in systems engineering, systems architecture, infrastructure engineering, network engineering, cybersecurity, field engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of enterprise systems architecture.
- Strong Linux administration skills.
- Experience with Windows Server environments.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking.
- Experience with routing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, DNS, DHCP, and network troubleshooting.
- Experience installing and configuring enterprise server and networking hardware.
- Knowledge of virtualization technologies.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity and system-hardening principles.
- Ability to diagnose complex hardware, networking, operating-system, and software problems.
- Ability to work independently at customer locations.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally with customers and senior technical personnel.
- Ability and willingness to perform hands-on hardware installation and troubleshooting.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with several of the following would be beneficial:
- VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, or similar virtualization technologies.
- Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco, Fortinet, Palo Alto, Juniper, or comparable enterprise infrastructure.
- Cloud infrastructure, including AWS, Azure, or hybrid environments.
- Docker and containerized environments.
- Network monitoring and security monitoring technologies.
- Identity and access management.
- Encryption and key-management technologies.
- Secure remote-access systems.
- SIEM and logging platforms.
- High-availability and redundant system architectures.
- Data-center or secure-site deployments.
- Deployment of systems in government, defense, telecommunications, intelligence, critical infrastructure, or other security-sensitive environments.
Relevant industry certifications such as CISSP, CCNP, CCNA, Security+, RHCE, VMware, Microsoft, or equivalent certifications are beneficial but not necessarily required when supported by substantial practical experience.
Travel Requirements
This position requires significant international travel.
Candidates must:
- Be willing and able to travel internationally on relatively short notice.
- Possess or be eligible to obtain a valid passport.
- Be comfortable working at customer facilities for multiple days or weeks when required.
- Be able to transport, install, and work with computer and networking equipment.
- Be flexible regarding working hours during deployments.
- Be capable of independently resolving technical problems while working away from the primary office.
Travel requirements may vary depending on customer deployment schedules.
Physical Requirements
Because this is a hands-on deployment position, the employee must be capable of:
- Installing and removing rack-mounted equipment.
- Connecting and organizing network and power cabling.
- Working in server rooms, data centers, and customer technical facilities.
- Safely lifting and handling typical computer and networking equipment.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is not solely an architect and not solely a field technician.
We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the entire technical deployment lifecycle:
Design → Prepare → Travel → Install → Configure → Secure → Integrate → Troubleshoot → Test → Customer Acceptance → Support
The right individual will have the technical depth to architect complex systems while remaining willing and able to personally install equipment and troubleshoot problems in the field.
They should be resourceful, security-conscious, professional with customers, comfortable working independently, and capable of making sound technical decisions under pressure.
What Success Looks Like
A successful Field Systems & Security Architect can be given a customer requirement and take responsibility for determining what infrastructure is needed, how it should be architected, how it should be secured, how it will be deployed, and what is necessary to make the system operational at the customer site.
The person should ultimately be someone the company can confidently send to a customer anywhere in the world to take technical ownership of a deployment and ensure that it is completed securely, professionally, and successfully.
