BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Under the direction of the Caucus Director of Communications, the Assistant Consultant will serve as a communications specialist who provides timely press support, communications products, social media support and creative ideas for all members of the California Senate Republican Caucus.
DUTIES:
The Assistant Consultant will draft written communication materials such as press releases, opinion editorials, letters to the editor, talking points, email blasts, social media posts, and more. The Assistant Consultant will help with press and media events as well as strategy, planning, and implementation of various communications project including, but not limited to, compiling news clips, monitoring news, directing videos, developing creative social media efforts, and planning out social media and press plans for legislation.
DESIRABLE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Candidates must have the ability to independently manage a substantial workload under strict deadlines (requires working early mornings and occasional nights and weekends as necessary); analyze complex legislative proposals and succinctly communicate the policy implications, both orally and in writing; demonstrate initiative and creativity; provide fresh and creative ideas for capturing attention on key issues and be organized in project management.
Demonstrate excellent written, research, computer, and communication skills. Meet the demands of the position including working long hours with a diverse team as well as being able to multi-task in a busy environment and work well under pressure and deadlines. Need to understand all social media platform and how to draft platform-specific content.
An in-depth understanding of the news media, journalism, social media, and other communication mediums is a must. Stay up to date on the latest visual, cultural, and algorithmic trends in social media. The ability to conceptually and creatively visualize news content. Excellent writer with strong proofreading skills and sound editorial and ethical judgment.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required. At least two (2) years relevant experience with producing and deploying timely content during rapid-response scenarios is required. Legislative experience preferred. LOCATION, SALARY AND FILING DATE:
This position is located in Sacramento, CA and requires in person attendance.
The Senate’s core business hours are 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and may require after hours or weekend work.
Final salary will be commensurate with experience and education. Seniority and significant experience are required to reach the higher end of the salary range.
