Job description

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is proud to be a no-kill organization that has been serving the animals and people of the Miami Valley since 1902. To put that into perspective, we have been committed to the animals in our community before the Wright Brothers invented flight! Our mission is to build a community in which all animals are valued and free from suffering, and life is enhanced through relationships with pets.

Position Summary:

Provides humane care: food, water, shelter, veterinary directed care, daily exercise, socialization, grooming, etc. for the Humane Society animals.

Essential Responsibilities:

Takes care of all animals in the building: cleaning, feeding, grooming, training, socializing, exercising etc.
Administers certain medications & vaccinations (with veterinary approval only) and checks for illness.
Keeps animal files up-to-date.
Makes sure all animals are vaccinated and ready for adoption in a timely manner (i.e. vaccinated, wormed, blood tests).
Evaluates the animal’s health and temperament and updates the Animal Care Administrator on a daily basis.
Assists with veterinary exams as needed.
Maintains cleanliness and organization in animal rooms, back hallway, food preparation room, outside kennel runs and other assigned areas of the building.
Launders and washes bowls, litter pans, towels, animal beds, carriers, etc.
Socializes with the animals and gives the animals love and affection.
Trains, encourages, motivates and provides positive guidance to volunteers for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.
Represents the Humane Society as a professional.
May be called upon to perform other HSGD tasks including but not limited to the following: picking up injured cats, cleaning cat or dog areas, cleaning areas of the building, data entry, mailing items, ordering items, taking animal pictures, describing animals, etc.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Basic knowledge of animals, proper care of animals, husbandry, and disease of dogs and cats
Succinct communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to organize thoughts in a logical, clear and concise manner
Ability to use animal equipment, such as snares, poles, nets, medications, traps, needles and syringes

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15-40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds

The noise level in the work environment is usually high. Hearing protection is recommended and available upon request at the expense of the Humane Society for those working in the dog kennel.
