Full Job Description

Vet At Your Door is a housecall veterinary practice built on the belief that pets deserve medicine that comes to them, delivered by a team who genuinely thrives in their work.

Founded in 2015 by Dr. Deirdre Frey, we have spent a decade building something privately owned, community-rooted, and intentionally different from corporate veterinary medicine. We are working toward establishing an employee stock ownership plan and becoming 100% employee owned within three years. If the ESOP is established, this position is expected to participate once applicable plan eligibility requirements are met; final eligibility, timing, and benefits will be governed by the adopted plan. If you have spent years making a corporate practice successful and watched the value go somewhere else, this is a different story.

The Role

As Area Operations Manager, you own three things. All three, at the same time, with equal weight. You report to the Director of Operations. This is a people-facing role: four days a week in person, whether that is in the office, alongside a team, or out on a ride-along, plus one flexible remote day.

1. An exceptional experience for clients and patients

You own the client experience from first call to visit completion, and you are accountable for client NPS.

Ride along regularly with field teams, not to supervise, but to see what is actually happening and remove the friction that gets in the way of great care
Fix the process behind a bad client experience, not just the incident
Make excellent care easier to deliver, so our teams can practice the way they want to practice

2. An exceptional place to work

Most operations roles treat this as a nice-to-have. Here it is a core deliverable, and you will be measured on it.

Be the person teams come to. Be present, be reachable, be someone people trust with a hard conversation
Give people clarity. Everyone on your teams should know what is expected, how they are doing, and what good looks like. Nobody should be evaluated against a standard they were never told
Close the loop. When someone raises a concern, they hear back about what happened. Every time
Own the day-by-day onboarding experience, working with our Lead Tech Trainer and logistics team so every hire is supported and field-ready before their first independent day
Hold real standards and hold them kindly. We believe you can hold people accountable and genuinely care about them at the same time, and we need a leader who believes that too
Bring the field's reality back to leadership, including the parts we will not want to hear

3. The sustainability of the practice

This is where you turn great intentions into a practice that lasts. Every efficient process you build and every dollar you help the business earn goes straight back into buckets one and two: better care, better pay, a stronger team, and real progress toward every employee actually owning a piece of what we're building.

Lead the day-to-day operational infrastructure for your area: staffing assignments, scheduling, inventory, and budget performance, with authority to make routine operating changes within approved budgets and company policies
Partner with the Director of Operations to turn financial and performance data into team-specific strategies that drive revenue and booking goals
Find inefficiency in scheduling, inventory, and route data, and implement solutions rather than recommendations
Understand the numbers well enough to explain them to a technician in plain language, because ownership only means something to people who understand what drives it

What We're Looking For

3+ years of multi-site or geographically dispersed operations management experience. Veterinary experience is preferred, but strong field-operations leadership in healthcare, home services, hospitality, or another client-centered service business will also be considered. Corporate or multi-site group experience is a genuine asset, because you already understand the operating discipline required to help us build a better alternative
A leadership style that earns trust and holds standards, and a track record of building performance and positive culture together
Someone who communicates proactively and does not leave people guessing
Hands-on experience with budgets and financial statements
Technically comfortable. We run proprietary scheduling, routing, and PIMS software built in-house, and we need someone who embraces systems rather than tolerating them
A self-starter who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment
CVPM preferred, not required
Based in Maine or genuinely excited to relocate. Brunswick is your home office, with regular travel to Biddeford and occasional visits to Kingfield

Compensation and Benefits

65,000 to 85,000 based on experience, plus bonus potential tied to team performance.
