POSITION SUMMARY
SN is proud to support United Way of York County (UWYC) in their search for a Vice President of Finance and Operations. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for all financial functions of the organization, including accounting, revenue recognition, financial reporting and analysis, budgeting, treasury management, accounts receivable and payable, regulatory compliance, insurance matters, and investments.
In addition to financial leadership, this role oversees key operational areas including IT, facilities, and HR infrastructure—supporting payroll and employee benefits administration. As a member of the Leadership Team, the VP of Finance & Operations will partner closely with the Treasurer, Board, and Finance Committee while remaining actively engaged in the day-to-day work. This is a broad, hands-on role that blends detailed execution with strategic planning, leading a small team and ensuring UWYC maintains strong financial stewardship and donor trust.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Core Financial Role
- Lead financial strategy and planning, aligning budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial modeling with UWYC’s mission and strategic priorities.
- Responsible for all day-to-day accounting operations, including posting journal entries, performing monthly close, and preparing accurate and timely financial statements.
- Ensure integrity of donor-related financial activity, including pledges, grants, sponsorships, cash receipts, and designation tracking, with accurate reporting and timely tax acknowledgments.
- Manage payables, cash flow, and financial obligations, maintaining strong controls and ensuring resources are available to support organizational and community impact goals.
- Own the annual budgeting process, partnering with department leaders to develop a zero-based budget and presenting a comprehensive analysis underlying assumptions to executive leadership, Finance Committee, and Board.
- Serve as a key financial partner to leadership and the Board, analyzing and presenting financial insights, and highlighting alignment with the organization’s strategic plan and long-term financial projections.
- Lead audit, tax, and regulatory compliance efforts, including coordination with external auditors, preparation and gathering of requested schedules and support, ensuring an efficient and timely annual audit and tax return.
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls, reconciling accounts, safeguarding assets, ensuring compliance, and reinforcing donor trust in UWYC’s financial stewardship.
- Oversee investment and reserve management, monitoring performance and ensuring alignment with established investment policies.
- Support Finance Committee operations, coordinating meetings and serving as the staff liaison.
Human Resources
- Manage outsourced HR and Payroll function
- Work with benefits and HR consultants on annual renewals and open enrollment
- Administer the organization’s variable compensation plan
- Coordinate the annual performance review process and staff salary increases
- Update employee handbook as needed.
Operations and Risk Management
- Oversee core operational infrastructure, including facilities, office operations, and vendor relationships, ensuring a well-functioning and welcoming workplace.
- Manage third-party partners and outsourced services, including utilities, maintenance, and contracted support.
- Ensure effective IT support and systems, enabling staff productivity through appropriate hardware, software, and service delivery.
- Lead organizational risk management efforts, including oversight of insurance programs and coverage adequacy.
- Implement and maintain practices that reduce operational and cyber risk, safeguarding organizational assets and data.
Leadership & Organizational Impact
- Serve as an active member of the Leadership Team, contributing to strategy execution, performance tracking, and organizational decision-making.
- Champion UWYC’s mission, values, and community presence, leading by example and engaging with stakeholders where appropriate.
- Build and develop a high-performing team, attracting, mentoring, and supporting finance staff while removing barriers to success.
- Collaborate across departments, fostering alignment, accountability, and effective communication.
- Promote continuous improvement, including process optimization and thoughtful adoption of new tools (including AI) to enhance efficiency and impact.
EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- The highest ethical standards, and a commitment to stewardship and transparency
- 6+ years’ experience, including leading a finance function
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA is a plus
- High level of systems aptitude, and advanced Excel skills
- Strong grasp of GAAP and effective internal controls
- Experience with external audits
- Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
- Absolute reliability and positive work habits
- Capable of multi-tasking, meeting deadlines and working under pressure
- Ability to pass background checks in accordance with insurance provider and legal requirements
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position operates in a professional office environment and involves regular communication and computer-based work. Occasional standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. For 100 years, United Way of York County has worked in the York County community to improve people’s lives. They began as The York Welfare Federation, an organization that raised funds on behalf of 17 member agencies.
