Full Job Description

ABOUT US: Downstate Health Physicians represents the faculty of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn’s only academic medical center. The position being offered is Medical Assistant for University Orthopaedic Associates medical practice. The Medical Assistant serves as a member of the health team in the treatment and care of patients, and assists with tasks to support the medical office. The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians in providing care to their patients. Their duties include recording and updating medical histories and contact information in patient files, scheduling patient appointments, and performing standard care procedures like checking vitals, collecting lab samples and/or changing dressings. The incumbent should have strong interpersonal skills and be adept at working with patients who may be in pain.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Greet and prepare patients for physical examination
Read and interpret physician orders
Monitor patient flow in exam and waiting rooms to reduce wait times and enhance service experience
Maintain clean examination room and equipment
Communicate with patients requiring examination and procedures, and provide reassurance as necessary
Complete all necessary forms in an accurate and timely manner (e.g., referrals)
Restock exam/treatment rooms and monitor inventories
Support clinical practice operations by providing cross coverage for a variety of administrative functions
Capable multi-tasker that is able to deal calmly with individuals who may be under stress
Consistently demonstrate excellent patient service, organizational and communication skills
Prioritize customer service and maintain a professional appearance at all times
Work with care teams, patients, and outside facilities to obtain necessary information required for care
Maintain knowledge of scheduling and medical terminology
Demonstrate a positive attitude and ability to solve problems independently within the scope of responsibility
Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and adhere to HIPAA regulations
Model the WE CARE values of the organization

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One (1) year work experience in private practice or hospital setting
High School diploma, Medical Assistant degree, or equivalent required
Strong phone and verbal communication skills
Basic computer skills including typing, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Athena EHR software preferred
Licensed driver with car preferred
Bilingual (Créole or Spanish) preferred
