Full Job Description

This position currently follows a hybrid work schedule, with three in-office days. Tuesday and Thursday are Company anchor days, and the third day will be worked out with your manager.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Subrogation Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of a caseload of auto and property subrogation files with the goal of maximizing recovery opportunities while providing excellent service to insureds, agents, and internal stakeholders. The position handles files of varying complexity and value, applying knowledge of subrogation law, comparative negligence, damages evaluation, and recovery strategies to secure favorable outcomes. The Subrogation Specialist collaborates with claim personnel, external carriers, and legal counsel to achieve optimal recovery results while maintaining compliance with company procedures and applicable regulations.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Job Knowledge:

· Apply a thorough understanding of subrogation laws, comparative negligence principles, industry regulations, arbitration procedures, and CMR rules.

· Maintain current knowledge of legal and procedural standards related to auto and property subrogation recoveries.

· Utilize claims management systems to track activities, deadlines, recoveries, and file status.

· Evaluate liability determinations, damages, recovery potential, and legal defenses to develop appropriate recovery strategies.

· Maintain knowledge of company policies, recovery procedures, and applicable state regulations.

Judgement:

· Evaluate subrogation opportunities and recovery potential based on established liability, damages, and comparative negligence findings.

· Develop and execute negotiation strategies designed to maximize recoveries while balancing cost, risk, and timely resolution.

· Evaluate compromise offers and settlement opportunities utilizing industry standards and applicable legal principles.

· Identify matters requiring escalation, arbitration, or referral to legal counsel.

· Exercise sound decision making in determining appropriate recovery actions and settlement authority.

· Seek guidance when appropriate and apply feedback to improve performance.

Communication, Relationship Building and Teamwork:

· Maintain effective communication with insureds, agents, adverse carriers, attorneys, vendors, and other stakeholders regarding recovery activities and claim status.

· Represent the Company professionally in all verbal and written communications.

· Present subject matter and feedback to management and adjusters, other stakeholders.

· Collaborate with claims personnel, legal counsel, and other internal business partners to support recovery objectives.

· Respond promptly and appropriately to inquiries while maintaining accurate and complete documentation.

· Foster productive working relationships with external carriers, legal counsel, and recovery partners.

· Support team objectives through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement efforts.

Delivery and Productivity:

· Manage a caseload of auto and property subrogation files of varying complexity and value completing responsibilities within established service standards

· Conduct timely file reviews and maintain diary systems to ensure proactive recovery efforts and adherence to established cycle time standards.

· Pursue recovery opportunities through negotiation, arbitration, litigation support, and other appropriate recovery methods.

· Negotiate liability and damages with adverse carriers, uninsured parties, attorneys and other responsible parties.

· Coordinate with claims staff and legal counsel to obtain documentation necessary to support recovery efforts.

· Ensure accurate documentation of recovery activities and file status within company systems.

· Demonstrate accountability and ownership for assigned files, driving recovery strategies and advancing files towards resolution while meeting department standards for file quality and recovery metrics.

Analysis/Business Insight/Compliance:

· Analyze liability findings, accident facts, damage documentation, and recovery prospects.

· Identify obstacles to recovery and develop strategies to improve outcomes.

· Prepare and support arbitration filings and responses as required.

· Adhere to company guidelines, legal requirements, regulatory standards, and subrogation best practices.

· Maintain complete, accurate, and compliant recovery documentation.

· Support departmental audits, reporting requirements, and process improvement initiatives.

Leadership:

Contribute positively to departmental goals and operational excellence.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

· Four-year college degree is preferred.

· Applicable industry courses, seminars, or professional designations (AIC or similar) preferred.

· Rhode Island and Connecticut Adjusters Licenses preferred, or ability to obtain them within 30-60 days of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

· Minimum three (3) years of auto claims experience required.

· Previous subrogation experience preferred.

· Experience negotiating liability and damage disputes preferred.

SKILLS:

· Excellent negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

· Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and professionally.

· Ability to independently manage a high-volume caseload while maintaining quality and productivity standards.

· Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management abilities.

· Ability to analyze and evaluate liability and damages issues.

· Work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

· Proficiency in claims management systems and Microsoft Office Applications.

Salary Range: $62,000 - $74,000 per year. This range is a good faith estimate which reflects the annual salary we reasonably expect to pay for this specific full-time position at the time of posting. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors including the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
