Job Summary
The Director of Tax Preparation is the senior department head of Anthem Tax Services’ Tax Preparation unit, holding full authority over all personnel, production, quality, and operational matters within the department. This role is specifically scoped to tax preparation and bookkeeping fulfillment, directing a team of Tax Preparers, Tax Accountants, and Bookkeepers, and is distinct from the firm’s Tax Resolution department. The Director of Tax Preparation is the highest-ranking authority within this unit, responsible for the end-to-end management of day-to-day operations and speaks on behalf of the department in all organizational contexts.
While primarily a director-level leadership role, this position will actively step in to prepare and review work as operational demands require. The Director of Tax Preparation reports directly to and collaborates closely with the General Manager to align departmental performance with firm-wide goals, optimize workflows, and drive operational excellence without compromising quality or output standards.
Active and in-good-standing licensure is a non-negotiable requirement for this position:
- Enrolled Agent (EA) — active licensure issued by the IRS; OR
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) — active license issued by a State Board of Accountancy
License number and standing verification will be required at time of offer. Licensure must remain active and in good standing as a condition of continued employment.
Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:
Departmental Leadership & Operations
- Function as the primary authority on all matters within the tax preparation and bookkeeping scope
- Direct and oversee all day-to-day operations of the department, ensuring efficient, accurate, and timely production of client deliverables
- Establish, communicate, and enforce departmental policies, procedures, workflows, and quality standards
- Make final decisions on all work output, including tax returns, bookkeeping deliverables, and client-facing documents, prepared within the department
- Represent the department in cross-functional meetings, leadership discussions, and client-facing escalations, speaking authoritatively on behalf of the team
People Management & Development
- Directly manage, mentor, and develop a team of Tax Preparers, Senior Tax Accountants, and Bookkeepers
- Conduct regular performance reviews, deliver constructive feedback, and administer disciplinary action in accordance with company policy
- Lead onboarding and structured training for new hires, ensuring staff are equipped to perform at the required level from day one
- Identify skill gaps across the team and implement targeted development plans or training initiatives to address them
- Foster a department culture defined by accountability, collaboration, precision, and continuous improvement
Production & Quality Control
- Set and manage production quotas and key performance indicators (KPIs) for all departmental staff, aligning output targets with firm capacity and client commitments
- Monitor daily, weekly, and seasonal workflow to ensure deadlines are consistently met and production volume remains on target
- Implement and oversee a rigorous quality control process for all work product leaving the department
- Step in to personally prepare or review complex tax returns and bookkeeping work during peak season or when quality standards are at risk
- Identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, or quality issues and take swift corrective action to restore throughput and accuracy
Scheduling, Capacity Planning & Workflow Optimization
- Manage staff scheduling and capacity planning across filing seasons and throughout the year to ensure adequate coverage and balanced workloads
- Collaborate with the General Manager to anticipate volume fluctuations, plan resource allocation, and adjust staffing or workflows accordingly
- Design and continuously refine internal workflows to maximize throughput and minimize turnaround time without sacrificing quality
- Evaluate and recommend tools, software, or process improvements that enhance departmental efficiency and output consistency
Client Escalation & Resolution
- Serve as the departmental point of escalation for complex, sensitive, or unresolved client issues that exceed the capacity of preparers or accountants
- Communicate directly with clients on escalated matters, providing clear guidance and resolution with professionalism and authority
- Ensure all client-facing communications and deliverables from the department reflect Anthem Tax Services’ standards of excellence
GM Collaboration & Strategic Alignment
- Report directly to and maintain a close working partnership with the General Manager to align departmental strategy with firm-wide objectives
- Provide the GM with regular reporting on departmental performance, staffing, production metrics, quality outcomes, and operational risks
- Collaborate with the GM on strategic planning, headcount decisions, and firm-wide initiatives that impact the Tax Preparation and Bookkeeping department
- Serve as a key voice in leadership discussions, providing expert insight on tax preparation operations and department capabilities
Required skills & experience:
- Active EA or CPA license, in good standing (see Licensure section above)
- Minimum 1–2 years of leadership experience in a tax preparation or financial services environment
- Demonstrated proficiency in tax return preparation across multiple return types (1040, 1120, 1120-S, 1065, and others)
- Proven ability to manage, motivate, and develop a team in a production-driven environment
- Strong working knowledge of professional tax software (Drake Tax, Lacerte, UltraTax, or equivalent)
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines at scale
- Clear, confident communicator — both written and verbal — with the presence to represent the department internally and externally
- High degree of professional integrity and commitment to quality and compliance
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $125,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
