Job Description

Job Title: Editor
Department: Instructional Design and Technology
Reports to: Manager, Editing
FLSA: Exempt
Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM (extended hours when requested)
Location: Remote

Job Summary

Reviews and edits written materials to ensure proper grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, clarity, format accuracy, content accuracy, and instructional flow.

Essential Job Tasks Additional duties may be assigned.

Edits course content by reviewing course materials to meet style guidelines and ensure clarity, consistency, and flow of instructional materials.
Conducts language reviews, verifies accuracy of course content, and acts as second verification for course answer keys and instructions by reviewing course materials to ensure that CSU standards are met.
Checks to ensure that courses are free of plagiarism and copyright violations by providing thorough evaluations of course content to confirm the production of quality courses.
Creates training sessions and learning experiences for team members as needed to enhance knowledge and skills and communicate course quality expectations.
Collaborates with team members and other CSU departments to ensure quality, complete projects, and solve problems.
Promotes, maintains, and enhances workplace culture within IDT and the university.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

Copy Editing - Knowledge of current and appropriate editing standards.
Quality & Quantity Balance - Knowledge of accuracy, thoroughness, and quality technical writing while possessing a knowledge of how productivity standards can be met and how to complete work in a timely manner.
Course Structure - Knowledge of university course standards and common course structures and verbiage.
Student Experience - Knowledge of the student experience in order to anticipate problems and misunderstandings in standard course verbiage and new course information proposals.

Skills

Written Communication - Proficiency in writing clearly and informatively, editing work for spelling and grammar, varying writing style to meet others’ needs, and reading and interpreting written information.
Oral Communication - Proficiency in speaking clearly and professionally, listening and obtaining clarification, responding well to questions, and participating in meetings.
Teamwork - Proficiency in working as part of a group and assisting coworkers from various teams and job functions.
Problem Solving - Proficiency in identifying, communicating, and resolving problems in a professional and timely manner.
Time Management - Proficiency in managing multiple tasks in the most efficient way possible.

Abilities

Dependability - The ability to ensure that tasks and projects are completed on time and are of quality.
Professionalism - The ability to approach others in a tactful manner and treat others with respect.
Adaptability - The ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and manage competing demands in a way that ensures productivity.
Technical - The ability to learn and utilize current instructional design, word processing, and project management software (Adobe Captivate, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc.) as well as learning management systems (SharePoint, Blackboard).

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or Social Sciences required.
At least three years of demonstrated editing experience is required.

Equipment Used

Office equipment including computers, telephones, printers, faxes, and copiers.
Software use includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Blackboard, SharePoint, Adobe Creative Cloud, and internal database software.
Secure and reliable internet is required for this position.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The position is remote, and when working remotely, the employee should have a designated workspace free from distractions and noise.

The on-site work environment is in a climate-controlled office setting, primarily sedentary, with frequent sitting, occasional walking and lifting, and frequent near-vision use for reading and computer work. The noise level is generally moderate.
