The Specialists has been a cornerstone of support for New York City’s creative community for over 40 years. As the East Coast’s premier supplier of fabrication, graphics, and props, we serve industries spanning film and television, live theater, advertising, art, and architecture. Operating from a 60,000 square foot facility in Queens, we combine traditional craftsmanship like mold-making and blacksmithing with innovative technologies such as 3D printing and advanced programming. Our dynamic team of artists, engineers, and designers thrives on pushing the boundaries of creativity and problem-solving to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions. We embrace both tradition and innovation to help bring visionary ideas to life, quickly and efficiently.

Role Overview

We are seeking a talented and driven 3D Design & Fabrication Engineer to join our growing team. This role sits at the intersection of design and hands-on fabrication — you'll be responsible for taking projects from digital concept to physical reality. The ideal candidate who thrives in a fast-paced shop environment, brings expertise across multiple fabrication disciplines, and is passionate about mentoring others. You will collaborate closely with both our fabrication team and external clients to deliver exceptional results on time and on spec.

Key Responsibilities

· Develop detailed 3D models, shop drawings, and technical fabrication documents from conceptual designs and client briefs.

· Contribute to fabrication efforts across multiple disciplines including CNC routing, 3D printing, carpentry, metalwork, mold-making, and painting/finishing.

· Collaborate with the fabrication team throughout the build process, providing technical guidance and troubleshooting support.

· Participate in material selection processes, balancing aesthetics, structural requirements, budget, and lead times.

· Liaise directly with clients to understand project goals, communicate design intent.

· Mentor junior team members and shop staff, fostering a culture of learning, quality, and craftsmanship.

· Ensure all drawings, models, and deliverables meet The Specialists' quality standards and client specifications.

· Contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives for workflow, fabrication techniques, and design tools.

Required Qualifications

· Proven expertise in 3D modeling with proficiency in Fusion 360 and the Adobe Creative Suite.

· Demonstrated ability to generate precise shop build drawings and technical documentation for fabrication.

· Hands-on experience working in a professional shop environment with metal, wood, mold-making, and paint/finishing materials.

· Experience in multiple of the following disciplines: Fabrication Engineering, Material Selection & Procurement, Architecture, Experiential Marketing, Prop Fabrication, 3D Printing, CNC Routing, Carpentry, Electronics Integration, Controller/PLC Programming.

· Excellent communication skills — comfortable presenting ideas to both technical teams and non-technical clients.

· Proven track record of mentoring colleagues and sharing expertise in a collaborative shop environment.

Software Proficiency

Candidates must demonstrate expert-level proficiency in one or more of the following CAD software platforms (or similar):

· Fusion 360

· Autodesk Inventor

· AutoCAD

· Rhino 3D

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience in experiential marketing, themed entertainment, trade show, or live event fabrication environments.

· Familiarity with electronics integration and embedded controller programming for interactive installations.

· Background in architecture or industrial design.

· Portfolio of completed projects demonstrating both design and fabrication work.
