Full Job Description

Job Position: Patient Intake/Interpreter

Immediate Supervisor: Lead Intake Specialists/Clinic Manager/Practice Administrator

Job Supervisory Responsibilities: None Classification: Non-Exempt

General Job Requirement: This role supports the clinical department with clinical, environmental, and clerical duties along with Spanish-English interpretation and translation. The bilingual CMA/RMA ensures accurate communication, cultural sensitivity, and efficient patient flow while assisting providers with direct care and procedural support. Responsibilities span across multiple departments and require adherence to HIPAA, OSHA, and CLIA standards.

Essential job responsibilities:

Clinical Support:

· Review provider schedules and organize patient flow.

· Escort patients to exam/procedure rooms and assist with mobility, dressing, and preparation.

· Collect patient histories and perform vitals and screenings per protocol.

· Assist providers and other clinical staff with procedures and documentation.

· Relay instructions to patients and families.

Administrative Duties:

· Sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab and imaging reports and hospital notes.

· Complete forms, requisitions, schedule appointments, update patient demographics and chart information. Athena experience preferred.

· Ensure compliance with HIPAA and organizational privacy and security standards.

Environmental Duties:

· Set up instruments and equipment per department protocols.

· Clean and disinfect rooms, along with cleaning and sterilizing instruments between patient visits.

· Sort and restock supplies in exam and procedure rooms.

Bilingual Communication Duties:

· Provide oral and written Spanish-English interpretation and translation across departments (Allergy, Audio, ASC, Clinic, Front Desk).

· Facilitate communication between providers and patients/families in the clinical, and administrative settings as well as over the phone to ensure compliance with federal language access mandates and promote cross-cultural understanding.

· Translate patient histories, complaints, and follow-up instructions into English medical documentation.

Other Duties:

· Perform additional tasks as assigned by team lead, Clinic Manager, Administrator, or Providers.

Education:

High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college course in medial assisting. May require medical interpreter’s certificate from the state and successful completion of translation examples, interpreter practice sessions, and medical terminology.

Experience:

Minimum of one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a medial office, along with at least three years as a professional translator in a medical clinic setting.

Other Requirements:

Maintain certifications in good standing from issuing boards.

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

1. Familiarity with medical office protocols, clinical procedures, and patient care standards.

2. Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and documentation practices.

3. Awareness of cultural values and language nuances relevant to patient populations.

4. Proficiency in written and oral translation techniques, including bilingual medical communication.

Skills:

1. Competence in performing medical assistant duties and using office equipment.

2. Strong interpersonal skills with diplomacy and professionalism.

3. Effective communication and patient education techniques.

4. Skilled in interviewing for demographic, insurance and health-related information.

5. Organized and detail-oriented in managing tasks and documentation.

Abilities:

1. Ability to learn and retain clinical procedures and protocols.

2. Ability to maintain a professional, compassionate demeanor and build positive relationships with patients, staff, and providers.

Equipment Operated: Standard medical exam/office equipment, which may include computerized health information management system, x-ray equipment, portable medical devices, etc.

Work Environment: Combination of medical office and exam/procedure rooms settings. Well lit, well ventilated, and adequate space.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies. Handles a high volume of staff and patient needs, with occasional spikes in demand.

Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
