Full Job Description

Library Assistant – Youth Services (Part-Time)
Job Description

Reporting directly to the Library Director, the responsibilities of the Youth Services Coordinator include performing daily tasks of the library such as checking out and reshelving materials, providing exceptional customer service, handling monetary transactions, and assisting with programming efforts, as well as conducting programming for children of all ages. Please see the Essential Job Functions for more detail.

HOURS & WAGE:
The Youth Services Coordinator is a part-time position. The starting hourly wage range for the Youth Services Coordinator is $9.00 - $10.25 per hour, dependent upon education and experience, with a schedule of 20-25 hours per week.

At the time of this posting, the library’s hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Friday,
10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. A set schedule can be determined between the successful candidate and the Library Director.

Candidates should be willing to work some Saturdays.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalent required
College credits preferred
Previous library experience is a plus
Previous experience working with children is preferred

SPECIAL CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS, LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid driver’s license.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provide excellent customer service, demonstrating a genuine interest in helping people
Prepare and conduct educational programs (hands-on activities, clubs, special events, etc.) utilizing components from the fields of science, technology, engineering, math, the arts, history, social sciences, and/or literacy for children of all ages, including, but not limited to family storytime, after-school programming, and teen programming
Prepare and conduct extensive children's programming for the annual Summer Reading

Program

Maintain display areas and thematic decorations as assigned
Work with the community members and organizations to improve the scope and quality of services offered
Interpret library policies and procedures for the public in a customer-friendly manner
Assist patrons in the selection and location of materials
Using the automated circulation system, check out library materials to the public; check-in returned items; issue library cards
Assist patrons in the selection and location of books and non-print materials and with the completion of Interlibrary Loan requests
Answer telephone and refer calls as necessary
Shelve materials and maintain order of collections; shelf-check materials
Assist patrons with photocopies, fax machine, computers, and other electronic devices available at the library
Collect fees or fines as necessary
Accurately handle and post monetary transactions
Use computers and the Internet effectively for providing Library services
Assist in daily operating procedures, including opening and closing tasks, light cleaning duties, programming initiatives preparation, and other duties
Maintain library display space
Complete special projects as needed
Oversee or train volunteers
Assist with library programming for all ages
Other duties as assigned

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Self-motivation
Ability to maintain composure while handling a variety of duties, deadlines, and difficult situations
Experience and willingness to work with children and youth of all ages
Must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups of all ages
Skill in computer search techniques
Problem-solving and decision-making techniques
Ability to read, write, and understand the English language
Ability to alphabetize materials correctly
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, including formal communications
Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant
Working knowledge of office equipment and accurate keyboarding skills necessary to manage clerical and cataloging duties
Effective, positive, and tactful communication skills
Skills in record compilation and maintenance
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Working knowledge of Dewey decimal system

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee or train volunteers as assigned

JOB LOCATIONS:

Most work will be performed at the Perkins Public Library.
Travel may be infrequently required for training or professional meetings.
