Job Description:

As a Mentor, you'll guide small groups of students through interactive, hands-on lessons in a supportive classroom setting. Lesson plans and materials are provided, allowing you to focus on inspiring academic excellence, building critical thinking skills, and reinforcing positive discipline. Collaborate with coordinators on activities, track student progress, and contribute to a mission-driven program that empowers families and cultivates limitless potential in students.

Responsibilities:

Attend mandatory training
Lead engaging sessions aligned with classical education principles.
Manage classroom routines, enforce positive behavior, and monitor student achievements.
Provide feedback and observations for progress reports.
Ensure a clean, organized learning space at the end of each day.
Adapt activities to support diverse learning needs while upholding program values.

What You Will Teach
Working closely with our Director of Education to administer and deliver engaging classroom lessons, you will facilitate:

Singapore Math (adapted via Dimensions Math Grades 5–8 pacing) — emphasizing conceptual depth, bar modeling, problem-solving, and perseverance. Cover key topics like whole numbers, fractions/decimals, ratios/rates/percent, pre-algebra (expressions, equations, algebraic manipulation), geometry readiness, data analysis, exponents/scientific notation, and linear equations — all tied to real-world American innovation (e.g., mapping pioneer expeditions or analyzing inventor statistics).
Orton-Gillingham Structured Literacy — explicit, multisensory phonics progressing through the 72 phonograms and 44 English spelling rules (e.g., Silent Final E jobs, Floss Rule, 1-1-1 doubling, dropping Silent E), decoding unmarked multisyllabic text (using the ASA decoding marking system), handwriting (manuscript to cursive transition), and spelling tied to patriotic vocabulary (liberty, republic, pioneer, self-reliance, Constitution).
U.S. History & Civics — primary-source focus on America's founding documents (Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Federalist Papers, Bill of Rights), heroic figures (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lewis & Clark), pioneers/explorers/inventors (Fall theme), and principles of liberty, justice, self-government, and civic duty — avoiding revisionism while celebrating exceptionalism and triumphs.
Literature & Rhetoric — great books from the Western canon and American classics, Socratic seminars, IEW-inspired persuasive writing/essays, oral presentations, and Friday projects that build national pride (e.g., debating patriotic poetry like "Paul Revere's Ride" or applying virtues to historical dilemmas).
Self-Governance & Moral Character — weekly discussions of virtues (Aristotle, Ben Franklin’s 13 virtues, Biblical principles), ethical decision-making, emotional intelligence, and civic responsibility — linked to the Pledge of Allegiance ("justice for all") and American moral traditions to foster trustworthy, responsible citizens.

Who We Are Looking For

Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Education, History, or a related field
Experience with classical education (trivium), Singapore Math/Dimensions Math, and Orton-Gillingham strongly preferred
Deep love for America’s founding principles and a commitment to teaching her exceptional story without revisionism
Ability to differentiate between logic-stage analysis (Pioneers) and rhetoric-stage expression & debate (Patriots)
Energetic, organized, and joyful classroom leader who models civic virtue
Willing and able to complete our mandatory training in ASA’s specific curriculum, pedagogy, literacy progression, and patriotic integration methods prior to the school year (provided by ASA to ensure excellence and alignment)
