Full Job Description

Our location in Larchmont Village is seeking a high-energy, kid-loving musician to lead our mini-music program. This program is set up to provide individualized private lessons for children who are not yet old enough to begin private study on a specific instrument.

Requirements:

a love for high-energy 3-5 year old kids
ability to play multiple instruments
knowledge of kid-appropriate songs, Classical Music, and resources
ability to prepare and maintain a long-term curriculum while adapting to the energy and interests of each individual student
past experience in a related position
comfortable with game and activity based learning
comfort with adjusting to and dealing with demanding parents and kids

Description of the current program:

Mini Music lessons allow children ages 3-5 to explore the boundaries of music through games, singing, dancing, hands-on instrument playing, sound recognition and theory. Each lesson is designed specifically for each individual student, dependent on his or her interests, personality, strengths, and experience.

Each student’s one-on-one personalized lesson is gradually shaped through his or her musical interests while teaching them fundamental music concepts. We introduce instruments with hands-on playing, introductory technique, and instrument care on a variety of instruments.

Basic music theory is learned in small intervals each lesson, such as the musical alphabet, line and space notes, note and rest values, rhythm counting, and note recognition on various instruments. A vocal song is taught every few weeks (example “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” or “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”) that teaches melody and lyric memorization, vocal pitch matching, and singing in rhythm; while also incorporating new and challenging rhythms using drums, shakers, and tambourines while singing to introduce multi-tasking and fine motor skills.

Each lesson also includes many rhythm exercises using games, singing, marching, dancing, call and response, copying, improvisation, and listening techniques. As each student gravitates toward his or her favorite rhythm exercises, the teacher gradually modifies the exercises to make them more challenging for him or her, adjusting as the lessons progress. Throughout the lesson, opportunities are taken within each exercise to introduce, teach, and review musical concepts such as fast versus slow, loud versus soft, short versus long, high pitches versus low pitches, as well as the musical vocabulary such as basic dynamics, basic tempo terms, treble clef, and composers.

Listening to music is also incorporated into each lesson, and while it covers music concepts through various games, its other important purpose is to introduce active listening skills to students, allowing them to express how each piece makes them feel emotionally and how or why it does that. Mini Music lessons are created for each individual student and are used to introduce him or her to all basic musical concepts and to help guide them toward their favorite instrument so they can continue with their musical studies.
